Book Description
Excerpt from The Jubilee History of the Derby Co-Operative Provident Society Limited, 1850-1900 There is no more picturesque and encouraging history of co - operative self-help anywhere than that of the Derby Society the third which has attained the distinction of a Jubilee. Rochdale had the distinction of being its precursor and of initiating new principles of progress, before unknown or unapplied, but Derby has excelled it in surmounting greater difficulties. Rochdale had twenty-eight pioneers. The Derby Society was founded by twelve. Rochdale had 28 of capital, Derby had only 2. Derby had no experienced advisers at the beginning, as Leeds had, to counsel it, assist it, and defend it. Derby shares profits with employes, in which respect it stands higher than Rochdale or Leeds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) was the outstanding statesman of the Victorian age. He was an MP for over sixty years, a long serving and exceptional Chancellor of the Exchequer and four times Prime Minister. As the leader of the Liberal party over three decades, he personified the values and policies of later Victorian Liberalism. Gladstone, however, was always more than just a politician. He was also a considerable scholar, a dedicated Churchman and had a range of interests and connections that made him, in many respects, the quintessential Victorian. Yet important aspects of Gladstone's life have received relatively little recent attention from historians. This study reappraises Gladstone by focusing on five themes: his reputation; his representation in visual and material culture; his personal life; his role as an official; and the ethical and political basis of his international policies. This collection of original, often multidisciplinary studies, provides new perspectives on Gladstone's public and private life. As such, it illustrates the many-sided nature of his career and the complexities of his personality.

Book Description
Robert Owen and the Owenites were associated with the rise of an early industrial society in Britain and with the development of an agricultural, frontier society in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century. This book, originally published in 1969, was the first to use both British and American source material, and tells the story of Robert Owen and the movement associated with his name, from the standpoint of comparative social and intellectual history. The book directs new light on Owenism, and at the same time illuminates general problems of the history of social movements and social change in modern societies.
