Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, 1907, Vol. 68 Another useful little amendment of the law provides that the arbitrator shall on the application of either party specify the amount awarded in respect of any particular improvement or any particular matter the subject of the award. The necessity for the introduction of the words particular matter in the present Act was occasioned by the refusal of some arbitrators to state more in their award than they were compelled to do by the actual words of the Act as, however, under the present Act the arbitrator will be required to determine other things besides the compensation for improvements, as indeed he was, although not to the same extent, under the earlier Acts, the provision should prove useful. Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, 1912, Vol. 73 Now one way of looking at a soil whereby some estimate may be formed of its behaviour towards water and air is to submit it to a mechanical analysis which will grade it into groups of particles of particular sizes. From this point of view all soils are mixtures of little particles - some large like sand, which, whether coarse or fine, possess no coherence but fall into a loose powder when dry; some much finer, so as to be scarcely gritty between the fingers and some so fine that they will hang in water like a cloud for many hours, are quite soapy to the touch, and cohere firmly on drying. Coarse sand lies at one end of the scale, the finest pipe clays at the other, but it should be borne in mind that the coarsest sandy soil will always contain some fine sand, silt, and clay, while the purest natural clays are not free from sandy admixtures. Just as one could grade a gravel deposit into two inch, inch, half-inch and quarter inch material, the process of mechanical analysis separates, partly by sieves but chie y by settlement from water, the soil into fractions of known size, these fractions being arbitrarily selected but possessing certain characteristic, if not sharply defined, differences of behaviour. Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, 1865, Vol. 1 For a period of 39 days preceding the close of the last quarter there was an average daily deficiency of 259 of temperature, and the present quarter opened with a continuation of the same weather, with somewhat increased intensity; the deficiency of temperature to the middle of July being as large as 3 daily on the average. On the 17th July a warm period set in and continued for 25 days, and the daily temperature was in excess to this was succeeded by 20 days of very cold weather, viz., from 9th August to 28th August, whose average daily temperature was 4 in defect; and it is remarkable that this deficiency of temperature fell on the nights only, the days were of their average warmth but the nights were very cold, causing the extremes of temperature to range from great heat by day to almost frost at night, and quite to frost on vegeta tion. A period of 12 days followed of warmth, the average daily temperature being 2a2 in excess; then the 10 days from September loth to 2oth, the temperature of the air was daily 2 below the average value, and the last 10 days of the quarter were in excess to 1? Daily. The mean high day temperatures in the months of July, August, and September were and being above in July, and of the same values as the average in August and Sep tember. The mean low night temperatures in the months of July, August, and September were 5l2, and being below in July, below in August, and O 3 above in September. The mean temperatures of the dew-point were and below their respective average. That in August was The lowest before recorded was on two or three occasions. The fall of rain was in defect in July and August, and slightly in excess in September. It was 03 in. In July, being 24 in. In defect; 14 in. In August, being 10 in. Deficient; and 2-8 in. In September, being 04 in. In excess. The mean temperature of the air at Greenwich in the three months ending August, constituting the three summer months, was being below the average of the preceding 93 years.
