Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal, Vol. 9: Of the Allied Dental Societies Dr. Ebersole, in a stirring and eloquent call, published in the Dental Summary last January, warned you that dentistry was not keeping in the van Of American progress. If that is true in any degree of dental practice as a whole, then it is most emphatically true of dental prosthesis. And on that point I believe there are no two Opinions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Allied Societies, 1909, Vol. 4 Dental Hygiene is an important part Of a broad, an universal movement for better care Of the public health through a more complete knowledge Of the conditions which promote health. The dentist must now take his active part and responsibility in the great progress for preventive medicine which is everywhere working. He must give to it his skill, his time, his money. One Of the best and surest marks Of civilization is found in the attitude Of its medical men - and the dentist belongs to the medical profession; and those medical men who consider them selves simply a kind Of glorified mechanic remain in a purely shop point of view. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Allied Societies, Vol. 6: March, 1911 The answer to this query will, it is feared, not be found in the dental literature of the period, indeed if that be taken as evidence, it might be affirmed with truth that this said profession. Is not building at all for the more enlarged thought of the com ing time, but it has, apparently, completed an edifice and proposes to roof it in as quite sufficient for its needs now, and for future periods. If this feeling were confined to the few it might be permitted to work out its own solution, but, unfortunately, the note of self-satisfaction is beginning to assert itself in high posi tions, indicating that a period of torpidity is extending through out the professional body. We seem to be drifting into the morass of intellectual life, the miasma of which is producing a species of mental toxemia detrimental to all future activity. The evidence of this seems to be strikingly apparent in the proceedings of the National Dental Association, recently. Held in Denver, Colorado. This body is supposed to exhibit the best element of the dental profession in the United States, and its utterances carry with them, or should do so, an influence far reaching for good or the reverse. Hence it is the duty of the journalist to analyze its work and judge whether this strikes a note in harmony with the past, present or future. Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
