Agriculture is crucial for the national economy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Adoption of new strategies for agriculture monitoring, rural land use planning, and management are urgently required to reduce hunger and poverty and to assure sustainable food and feed production for future generations. The availability of reliable information on natural resources and agriculture for its monitoring and analysis is indispensable to the development and implementation of such strategies. For this purpose the project “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions’ Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenario Development” (GCP/AFG/087/EC), funded by the European Union (EU), is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Within the context of this project, FAO and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are developing a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity (NAEZ) in Afghanistan. This Atlas is the first of two books and provides the collected information and maps of the country based on the agro-climatic Indicators.

This report shares an analysis of the effects of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the agri-food system in Afghanistan. It analyses the results of a field assessment conducted between 7 and 26 February 2021. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing a project to contribute to data collection and analysis linked to COVID-19 to inform evidence-based programming in selected countries. The objective is to assess the effects of COVID-19 in the agri-food system, which includes crops, livestock and fishing, food supply, livelihoods, and food security of the rural population at the national level. Information is collected from primary sources of the production process: producer households, traders or marketers, inputs suppliers, extension officers, and key informants. A first-round of data collection was conducted in 2020, followed by a first report published in March 2021. A third-round is planned before the end of 2021.

The Afghanistan Soil Information System (AfSIS) project, funded by FAO core budget, has completed soil surveys, analyzed soil samples, and mapped soil in nine provinces of Afghanistan. This Afghanistan Soil Atlas is the culmination of this work. This Atlas details soil properties, soil types, key nutrients in soil, and threats to agriculture from degraded soil in nine provinces, as well as selected national soil maps. This Atlas will help policymakers and land users better plan crop plantations, target irrigation designs, and create better climate change mitigation, and natural resource management strategies. The project data and methodology was comprised of field soil profile studies, laboratory soil analyses, and geo-data information. Soil profile site selection considered natural factors influencing soil formation, total land area, and available financial resources. The locations of soil profile sites were preloaded into GPS-enabled mobile or tablet application in order to guide the surveyors to the exact point in the field. During fieldwork, the selected soil profiles including 2-3 soil surface samples were studied according to the FAO Soil Profile description standards. Soil laboratory analysis methods were mostly those, which are favorable for arid and semi-arid region. The new national soil maps created from this data are on 1:200,000 scale, while provincial-level maps are on 1:50,000 scale.

This Open Access book explores heritage conservation ethics of post conflict and provides an important historical record of the possible reconstruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues, which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in Danger in 2003 as “Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley”. With the condition that most surface of the original fragments of the Buddha statues were lost due to acts of deliberate destruction, this publication explores a reference point for conservation practitioners and policy makers around the world as they consider how to respond to on-going acts of destruction of cultural heritage. Whilst there has been an emerging debate to the ethics and nature of heritage reconstruction, this volume provides a plethora of ideas and approaches concerning the future treatment of the Bamiyan Buddha statues. It also addresses a number of fundamental questions on potential heritage reconstruction: how it will be done; who will decide; and what it should be done for. Moreover when it comes to the inscribed World Heritage properties, how can reconstructed heritage using non-original materials be considered to retain authenticity? With a view to serving as a precedent for potential decisions taken elsewhere in the world for cultural properties impacted by acts of violence and destruction, this volume introduces academic researches, experiences and observations of heritage conservation theory and practice of heritage reconstruction. New evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.
