Book Description
Peter Macdonald Blachly takes us on a unique adventure, documenting the seventeen years he spent in a spiritual cult, while providing candid insights into the circumstances and conditions that set him up for manipulation by a charismatic and malevolent narcissist posing as a spiritual teacher. He provides a colorful and spellbinding description of adventures in India where he travels extensively with a group of fellow converts performing the sacred music of the Sikhs for audiences of tens of thousands. Back in the US, he forms a "spiritual" rock band that tours the country from Maine to Vancouver, weaving his travel adventures together with his own journey of spiritual awakening and his gradual disillusionment and eventual break from his Guru. Blachly's understanding of psychology and human frailties, make the lessons he draws from his own experiences universal and highly relevant today, when personality cults have infected both the political and religious life of the nation. While he pulls no punches about the moral failings of his Guru, the book is not an expose. Instead, while acknowledging that most people who started studying yoga with him in the late 1960s and early '70s did not join the cult, he writes with humor and introspection about his own vulnerabilities and the misplaced idealism that set him up for exploitation. Regarded by his fellow Sikhs as a powerful personality and pillar of the community, he is unflinching about acknowledging his own fractured sense of identity that he struggles to overcome. Most of all, "The Inner Circle" is an entertaining and compelling read about his journey into and back out of a cult that remains active today.

Book Description
The theme of loss is expressed or implied in much of Virginia Woolf's fiction and non-fiction, and one that resonates with the story of her own life, from her childhood, through her loss of family, and of friends, and of security in two World Wars, to her struggles with mental illness and her eventual suicide. And yet Virginia Woolf was, by all accounts, a lively and engaging woman, full of warmth, humor, maternal feeling (for her sister's children, as she had none of her own, passion, and exultation. She had a prodigiously active career, and she stood at the center of a large group of notable, engaged figures, many of them public intellectuals at the forefront of their generation, who were connected to her (and to each other) by bonds of family, affinity, shared artistic and social enterprise and, above all, affection. This group, and their friends, produced mountains of books, hundreds of square feet of paintings, and reams of press. The selection of material in this recent Grolier Club exhibition and its accompanyning catalogue documents the mutual enrichment of their life and work, and the resonance of Virginia Woolf's greatest literary work with the story of her life and the lives of those who were dear to her. Much of the material is reproduced here for the first time. Items from William Beekman's collection of Virginia Woolf and Bloomsbury span her life and career, and include photographs, letters, association copies, artwork, and ephemera. From Barbara Dobkin's collection of feminist history are a number of items from Virginia's adolescent library as well as material documenting her relationship with Vita Sackville-West. The Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College provided many early images--drawn from Leslie Stephen's photo albums--as well as copiously annotated proof material and samples from Virginia's important correspondence with Lytton Strachey. Designed by Jerry Kelly, and printed in an edition of 1500 copies.

Book Description
Photographer George Platt Lynes, painter Paul Cadmus, and critic Lincoln Kirstein played a major role in creating the institutions of the American art world from the late 1920s to the early 1950s. The three created a remarkable world of gay aesthetics and desire in art with the help of their overlapping circle of friends, lovers, and collaborators. Through hours of conversation with surviving members with their circle and unprecedented access to papers, journals, and previously unreleased photos, David Leddick has resurrected the influences of this now-vanished art world along with the lives and loves of all three artists in this groundbreaking biography.

Book Description
The art critic Dave Hickey once identified the Forth Worth Circle as "Texas' first indigenous group of consciously cosmopolitan and irrefutably modern artists," Their work, he wrote, "represents the fruit of a special time in the culture of the western United States" (Artspace, winter 1986 -87). This book chronicles the Forth Worth Circle's distinctive output during the 1940s, the decade of their genesis and greatest innovation. These "genuine citizens of the world," as Hickey called them, possessed an unconventional vision that radically sidestepped the traditional art of post-Depression Texas. The members of the Circle responded to modern art by created a unique aesthetic based on contemporary surrealism and abstraction, and they did so drawing from their own fertile imaginations. In his essay on the Circle, Scott Grant Barker relates the personal and captivating history of these eleven young artists fro whom the standards of the day were no longer acceptable. Jane Myers writes to the aesthetic evolution of their work, including their artistic techniques and influences. The catalogue also includes succinct biographies, accompanied by photographs, of each fop the artists. Among the legends and legendary figures in Forth Worth's past - and there are many - the artists of the Fort Worth Circle occupy a special place as pioneers of modern art in a city that is today one of the preeminent art meccas in the United States. This catalogue, published by the Amon Carter Museum to coincide with an exhibition by the same title, will remain the definitive source of their art and history for years to come.

Book Description
In the 1960s, when she was an unmarried college sophomore, Lynn Franklin gave up her newborn son for adoption. Using her own story as a point of departure, Franklin examines the changing face of adoption and explores the uncertainties and emotions that surround it with rare honesty and perception. In May the Circle Be Unbroken, Franklin covers virtually every possible form of adoption, but, perhaps most important, she speaks to adoptees wondering if they should search for their mothers and to women who have given up a child and are wondering if they are emotionally able to reconnect. While her own powerful story anchors the book, it is her voice as a birthmother that will distinguish this book from others on the subject. Since finding her son, Franklin has come to know his wife and children and they, too, have become an important part of her life. In so doing, she has closed one of life's most precious circles. May the Circle Be Unbroken will prove invaluable for readers concerned with the practical, emotional, and legal aspects of adoption, whether they are thinking of making an adoption plan for their child or hoping to be chosen as suitable parents for someone else's child. May the Circle Be Unbroken is both a moving memoir of a woman who reunited with a child she gave up for adoption and a no-nonsense book that gives readers an intelligent and well-informed approach to adoption.
