Book Description
Excerpt from An American Molder in Europe In 1909 the author was accorded the honor of being one of the fraternal delegates selected by the American Federation of Labor to represent this great body of North American trade-unionists at the convention of the British Trades-union Congress. After the adjournment of this representative body of British trade-unionists the desire of the International Molders' Union of North America to enter into practical working agreements with the principal molders' unions of Europe led to a tour through several European countries. This opportunity of studying the European trade-union movement was not overlooked. A careful investigation was made of the structure and methods of the organizations which had been formed by European workmen with the object of enabling them to elevate their standard of living through collective effort. Believing that a record of these observations and the impressions which these countries produced, when visited for the first time by a workman whose principal interests were directly connected with the trade-union movement, might prove interesting and of some value, a series of articles was published in the International Molders' Journal, under the caption of "An American Molder in Europe." These were illustrated, with one or two exceptions, from photographs taken by the author. Owing to the interest which was shown in the articles as they appeared, and the request that they should be compiled in book form by those who seemed to find some merit in them, this volume has been produced.
