Book Description
Excerpt from Indian Problems What would England be without India? India means the greatest customer of England; India means the greatest employer of the best of English intellect and manhood; India means the noblest achievement of England. Again, what would India be without England? Who would protect her from the Central Asian free hooters? Who would guarantee the internal peace? Who would bring her deserts and jungles under cultivation? Who would give her the benefits of modern science and modern civilization? The unity of England with India is therefore a Divine dispensation for the good of both the countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Indian and His Problem The foregoing statement will, I trust, excuse the somewhat frequent reference found in these pages to matters which fell to me to handle officially. Of any departures from my methods which may have been made or are likely hereafter to be made by any suc cessor in office, I cannot speak with the same authority. On the other hand, as the solution of our problem has been progressive, and as it had just entered a critical stage when I was called to take charge of it, any ex tended discussion now of questions which were settled before that time would be a little like treating ancient history as a current topic. Book Description
Excerpt from The Indian Question This, however, is the Indian of history. The Indian for whom the government is called to pro vide subsistence and instruction presents no such psychological difficulties. Curious compound and strange self-contradiction as the red man is in his native character, in his traditional pursuits, and amid the surroundings of his own wild life; yet when broken down by the military power of the whites, thrown out of his familiar relations, his stupendous conceit with its glamour of savage pomp and glory rudely dispelled, his occupation gone, himself a beggar, the red man becomes the most commonplace person imaginable, of very simple nature, limited aspirations, and enormous appetites. Book Description
Excerpt from A Great Indian Problem and a Suggested Solution What is the Indian Problem? It has two aspects. (1) In Great Britain it appears to be a spirit of "unrest" and "discontent." Now and again, one sees in the London and Provincial newspapers, the ugly words "Sedition in India." (2) In India, the problem is one that daily presses upon the millions of its people, the problem of making two ends meet; of the food supplies for the ever growing population, and wherewithal to buy the needs of life? Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there is a cause for "unrest" and "discontent," but it is Economical and not Political. A great solution lies, in my opinion, as I will attempt to show in this pamphlet, in the development of the produce of land, and in freeing the cultivator from the harassment and hardship of the present system of cash fixed payment, according to a periodical or any kind of assessment. Before proceeding to outline my scheme in somewhat greater detail, I will here just say that from the knowledge of my own countrymen, I firmly believe that a revision of the Government of India's Land Revenue Policy in some accordance with my proposed solution of the problem will speedily lead to a development of land produce which will tend to alleviate, if not terminate, the "unrest" and "discontent," the evidences of dissatisfaction with the outward conditions of life. Book Description
Excerpt from The Indian's Side of the Indian Question Serious trifling with the Indian question seems to be coming to a close. The nations of colonial times, and the high contracting parties whom the Republic met as apparent equals during its first ninety years, have come down to) draw rations under the to be blanketed and continental tramps. In the last analysis of the Indian, in Congress and on the border, he is discovered to be simply a man, and more or less like all Americans; and the recent and so far final proposition is to treat him as an American. In coming to this we have had a tedious, annoying, nugatory, and mortifying series of theories, experiments, and makeshifts. Meanwhile, there has been an apparent decline in their numbers, from the highest official maximum, of about in 1872, to in 1885.
