Book Description
Excerpt from The Index, 1902 In 1868 the family moved west and settled on a farm in Perry, Pike county, Illinois. Here the remainder of his boyhood was spent in a home well provided with books and periodicals. At this period he read everything within his reach and obtained a large fund of general information. A farm hand who was something of a naturalist, gave him a strong impulse toward natural science and started him in the study of botany and zoology by the rational method. An inspiration to theory, mathematics and literature he now credits to Joseph Dobbins, a former student of our university. In 1873 Mr. Felmley enrolled at Blackburn University, Carlinville, Illinois, where he remained three years, devoting most of his time to a study of the classics. At the age of nineteen he entered the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with advanced stand ing, and was graduated in three years. In college, he ranked high as a student and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of the faculty. He was very active in the literary societies and in the debates, and was fond of games and sports. His college course was broken at the end of the second year, by two years of teaching, one in the country near Virden, Illinois, and the other at Carrollton, Illinois. Book Description
Excerpt from The Index, 1902, Vol. 32 More important and intimate does this relation become during the years of the college course. AS the student passes from one class room to another he takes with him the results of the influence there felt, either as an inspiration to more strenuous effort or as a mental soporific that is placidly satisfied with the reach of present attainment. The years after graduation, too, are frequent reminders of this patient friend or that judicious counselor among the members of the Faculty of the Old college, to which memory like a pilgrim gray shall love to return and linger in life's twilight hours. To gain the highest success as a teacher in college, one must be in Close touch with the student body. He must be able to look at questions from the student's standpoint, to interpret correctly the Chan ging phases of the life of the college, and to endure the thousand natural shocks that (college) flesh is heir to. It is well, in these days especially, if he be an athlete; but that is not enough. It is highly desirable that he be a scholar, well equipped and well developed, thereby deserv ing and receiving the respect of every student; but even this is not enough. He must be a man and a student, desiring knowledge, intent in his search after truth, looking upon life in the college world with even more courage and hope than inspire the young hearts about him, and never for a moment losing faith in the ultimate supremacy of industry and righteousness and purity. Book Description
Excerpt from Index to the Periodicals of 1902 The new volume of the Annual Index to Periodicals, which has now been completed, does for the periodicals of 1903 what the previous twelve volumes Of the Annual Index have done for. The years 1890 - I90I inclusive. There is a story told. Of the writer Of a recent famous biography to the effect that he found the already existing literature Of his subject so voluminous that he began his task Of perusing it by rejecting all the books and biographies which contained no index. Now an index has been aptly described as the bag and baggage Of a book, Of more use than honour; even such who seemingly slight it, secretly using it, if not for need, for speed of what they desire to find. If this be true Of the index to a book, how much more true must it be of an index which arranges and classifies for permanent reference all the articles Of any importance which have been published throughout the year in the pages of nearly two hundred files Of reviews and magazines? The compilation of a Catalogue is invariably looked upon as an extraordinary piece of labour. To say the least, the compilation of a catalogue does not usually represent more work than an index of similar dimensions; and very Often a catalogue is nothing more than a mechanical alphabetical arrangement. Of the books by author and title, without any reference to the subject matter at all, except, perhaps, where the subject happens to be indicated in the title. When, however, any Classification is attempted, it is only a very general one as a rule, and the titles of books are rarely repeated more than once or twice in the catalogue. To compile a catalogue on a more extensive scale would no doubt represent an enormous labour for each library, but it might be worth while to do something Of the kind once for all for use in all libraries, and have it kept up to date by supplements issued at regular intervals. Under the present system each library publishes its own catalogue to much the same Class Of books, and the labour is done over and over again. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions for 1902 and General Index, 1857 to 1902 AS regards our own domestic concerns, the recent practice of issuing to members an annual report from the council and a statement of accounts in which the year's proceedings are briefly summed up, obviates the necessity for my detaining you with any simple record of events. It is, however, well that your attention should be drawn to some general points, which, besides being Of particular importance, may perhaps serve to indicate the direction in which the influence and value of the society may be extended. Book Description
Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: Fourth Supplement, From January 1, 1897 to January 1, 1902 It has always seemed very desirable that the Index should contain entries under the names of the writers of the articles. This feature is included in the Annual Literary Index, whose successive issues furnish the material from which these supplements are principally made up. But such-entries added to those now included would nearly double the amount of matter and the consequent size and cost of the volumes, which consideration is simply prohibitive from a commercialiv preface.
