The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of Puerto Rican and Mexican high school female students about their experience with teachers in their educational career. Based in Critical Race Theory (CRT), a qualitative interview research design was used to investigate views on past/present teachers, rather or not they felt that they were treated fairly in the schools and if they felt prepared for higher education. The researcher questioned if having a mismatch between teacher and student, in regards to race and culture, leads to a positive or negative impact on learning in school. The participants' interview responses were recorded, then summarized, minute by minute by the researcher and presented for analysis. Themes developed through the interviews were analyzed through a critical race and culture perspective. Some include, being able to teach in a variety of ways, the division between teachers and students, and the use of the child's home language in the schools. The study concludes with a summary of these findings and recommendations for action that teachers could consider, based on the suggestions given by the participants. [from author's abstract].
