Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Co-Operation in Scotland It is peculiarly appropriate that the history of the co-operative movement in Scotland should be written at this time, as the present year is to all intents the jubilee of co-operation in Scotland, it being in 1860 that the principle of dividing profits on purchases was generally adopted in this country, and I think that the perusal of the following pages should convince the reader that the time is ripe for such a work to be undertaken. The Scottish Section of the Co-operative Union deserve the gratitude of all co-operators for the idea of compiling such a volume, and they are to be congratulated on their good fortune in finding Mr Maxwell ready and willing to undertake the work. Mr Maxwell, who so recently retired with honour from the board of management of the Wholesale Society (to the general regret of the co-operators of Scotland), might well have rested content with the reputation he had obtained and the results achieved by his long and arduous labours for the good of the movement; but his interest in the cause being deep-rooted, his response to the call was prompt and ungrudging. No man better fitted for the task could have been chosen. In his youthful days, Mr Maxwell was an active trades unionist. Removing to Edinburgh, he became a member of St Cuthbert's Co-operative Association, and as early as 1877 was secretary of that society, acting at the same time as secretary to the East of Scotland Conference Association. Book Description
Excerpt from The Co-Operative Wholesale Societies, Limited, England and Scotland: Annual for 1899 The article, Co-operation in its Relation to other Forms of Collectivism, by Mr. A. E. Fletcher, editor of the New Age, is thoughtful and broad, and should tend to promote an extended Spirit of unity amongst the many organised efforts being made in the direction of social reform. The contribution by Mr. John Burns on Risks and Casualties of Labour deserves attentive perusal. It is an appalling record of death and injury attendant upon the industries of peace, and the comparisons drawn between the victims of war and those of labour are of startling import. We have recently been disturbed by alarms of decrease in British trade, and Mr. J. A. Hobs'on treats of these rumours, but summarily disposes of them as unfounded, in his article on Foreign Competition and its Effect on Home Industries. The subject is Viewed in an impartial light, is dealt with clearly, and will, doubt less, reassure the foreboding minds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Co-Operative Wholesale Societies Limited: England and Scotland; Annual for 1896 We have made a special point in submitting the articles relative to the Wholesale Societies and their members and the duty of the individual member to the Store, and in our opinion it is very necessary, even at this stage, that these matters of principle should be better understood and more widely accepted. It Should never be forgotten by individual (lo-operators that the Wholesale Societies are the natural complement to the Stores, and just as it is the duty of the member to be true to his Store, so it is equally the duty of the Stores to act loyally to the Wholesale Societies, which are their institutions. In the matter of the goods produced at their own Wholesale Works there is much room for increased demand, and certainly it is not too much to request that they Should ask for and use the goods made by and for themselves. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Co-Operation, Vol. 1 Emerson begins a poem with the words, "God says, I am tired of kings." Lest the reader should say he is tired of prefaces, I make this one very short. Other histories on this subject will be written, but whatever their merits may be, they cannot be written by any one caring more for Co-operation than myself, or who has been concerned in its career from the days of the Rochdale Pioneers, or been personally conversant with the incidents and persons who made the movement. I have known the motives of those who have promoted it, of those who have retarded it, and those who have withstood it, and for seventy years have vindicated it against its adversaries. The story of this movement is that of an eyewitness. The Third Part of this work brings the History down to this date, with brevity, but with sufficient explicitness to enable the reader to understand the growth and trend of this new Order of Labour. Industrial Co-operation - voluntary concert, with equitable participation and control among all concerned in any enterprise - is a definition that would now be accepted by political economists and journalists. Book Description
Excerpt from Co-Operation in Ireland The present volume is the third included in the "International Series" of books published by the Publications Committee of the British Co-operative Union. This series is intended, first, to serve as an introduction to the study of the cooperative movement in its national and international aspects, and, secondly, to interest the general reader in co-operation. Each volume included in the series, therefore, contains an account of the history, organisation, and work of the co-operative movement in one particular country. The co-operative movement in Ireland, of which a description is given in the following pages, deserves to be carefully studied, not only by co-operators, but also by all who are interested in the organisation of rural life and industry. Co-operation has spread in Ireland in a truly remarkable manner, and it cannot be gainsaid that the present prosperity of Irish agriculture is almost entirely due to the success of the many different types of co-operative society described in this book. The authors of this volume, Messrs. Lionel Smith-Gordon, M.A., and Cruise O'Brien, M.A., were the first and second librarians in charge of the Co-operative Reference Library, The Plunkett House, Dublin, and they therefore possess intimate knowledge of every part of the co-operative movement in Ireland. The two chapters dealing with industrial co-operation in Ireland have been contributed by Mr. L. P. Byrne, assistant manager of the Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society.
