Book Description
Excerpt from The Heart of India: Sketches in the History of Hindu Religion and Morals N this little book I have brought together a few sketches of the things that are nearest to the heart of the millions of India. The heart is not the head, and therefore I have said but little of the great intellectual problems Which have busied the Hindu brain for well-nigh two thousand years. But from the schools of the Pandits certain thoughts have gone forth Which in a more or less vague form have become an integral part of the people's stock of ideas. Some thing therefore has been said of these, but not much. The main part of my task has been to shew What have been the worthiest answers given by the Hindus to the great questions of man's relation to God and to fellow-man. These answers have been many. Some are from learned schoolmen, like Sankara and Ramanuja others are from simple laymen, like Vémana. But all of them are utterances of the vital faith of millions. We dare not ignore them. If I have ventured to speak in condemnation of the unworthy legends Which have gathered 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Cesari argues that both religious and national communities are defined by the three Bs: belief, behaviour and belonging. By focusing on the ways in which these three Bs intersect, overlap or clash, she identifies the patterns of the politicization of religion, and vice versa, in any given context. Her approach has four advantages: firstly, it combines an exploration of institutional and ideational changes across time, which are usually separated by disciplinary boundaries. Secondly, it illustrates the heuristic value of combining qualitative and quantitative methods by statistically testing the validity of the patterns identified in the qualitative historical phase of the research. Thirdly, it avoids reducing religion to beliefs by investigating the significance of the institution-ideas connections, and fourthly, it broadens the political approach beyond state-religion relations to take into account actions and ideas conveyed in other arenas such as education, welfare, and culture.

Book Description
The only book of its kind, this balanced and accessibly written text explores the geographical study of religion. Roger W. Stump presents a clear and meticulous examination of the intersection of religious belief and practice with the concepts of place and space. He begins by analyzing the factors that have shaped the spatial distributions of religious groups, including the seminal events that have fostered the organization of religions in diverse hearths and the subsequent processes of migration and conversion that have spread religious beliefs. The author then assesses how major religions have diversified as they have become established in disparate places, producing a variety of religious systems from a common tradition. Stump explores the efforts of religious groups to control secular space at various scales, relating their own uses of particular spaces and the meanings they attribute to space beyond the boundaries of their own communities. Examining sacred space as a diverse but recurring theme in religious belief, the book considers its role in religious forms of spatial behavior and as a source of conflict within and between religious groups. Refreshingly jargon-free and impartial, this text provides a broad, comparative view of religion as a focus of geographical inquiry.

Book Description
Hindu Goddesses is a valuable sourcebook and reference work for students and scholars of Hindu goddesses and of Hinduism in general. Each goddess is dealt with as an independent deity with a coherent mythology, theology and, in some cases, cult of her own. Within the complex, diverse, and rich goddess traditions of Hinduism, one can find suggestions of nearly every important theme in the Hindu religion. In many ways, this book is as much a study of the Hindu tradition itself as it is a study of one aspect of that tradition. No other living religious tradition has displayed such an ancient, continuous, and diverse history of goddess worship.

Book Description
Hindus have received their religion through revelation, the Veda, which is the sourcebook of Hindu tradition. Hindus maintain that the Veda is without beginning and without end. How can a book (or books) be without beginning or end? By the Veda, Hindus do not mean books. They mean the accumulated treasure of spiritual laws discovered by numerous sages and saints at different times in the course of the long history of Hindus and Hinduism in India. The Vedas teach that creation is without beginning or end and appears in eternal cycles of creation and dissolution. Hindus believe that the soul of man (Sanskrit: atman) is eternal and immortal, perfect and infinite, and death means only a change of center from one body to another. The present is determined by our past actions; and the future by the present. The whole purpose of Hindu religion is to become perfect, to become divine, to reach God, and see God. This reaching God, seeing God, and becoming perfect
