Lecture. In contemplating any question of social or historical bearing we are generally, from the absurd bias of out monkish education, diverted from our own race and nation to trace the origin of all that is good and great in us influences, not only foreign as to blood, speech and thought, but actually most inimical to ourselves and our true progress, as a nation. Whenever the history of our race is attempted, the true ancestors from whom we derive everything in us which is specifically English are shuffled off the stage anyhow, so that we really get rid of them. Excerpt from The Health Exhibition Literature, Vol. 14 Whilst a number of details as to the age at which manual work in schools should be commenced, as to the class of teachers who should be employed, and as to the character of the work that should be encouraged have yet to be settled, before any authoritative scheme can be laid before the public, it may be taken for granted that in all large towns where workshops are introduced into elementary schools the instruction should be rather disciplinary than professional, and Should have for its Object not the teaching of a trade, but the imparting to the pupil a general knowledge of, and familiarity with, the use of such tools as are required in almost every kind of work in which the pupil may afterwards be engaged. In districts where encouragement is'needed for developing home industries, it may be desirable to spe cialise the workshop teaching at an early. Age; but, con sidering the difficulties which the complete mastery of the three R's and of drawing presents, I believe that if work shop training he introduced into our elementary schools it should not be begun before the pupil enters the fifth standard, and Should be developed in the higher elemen tary rather than in the lower schools.
