Book Description
Excerpt from Nerves in Order, or the Maintenance of Health MY last popular work, Nerves in Disorder, seems to require a companion work on Nerves in Order so that the science of prevention may be placed on the same footing as that of cure. And although, singularly enough, preven tion has never had the interest with the public that the question of cure possesses, it is undoubtedly the higher science of the two. Book Description
Excerpt from The Conquest of Nerves It is no lasting comfort for him to know that his organs are sound. They may be as sound as the rock of Gibraltar, but so far as he personally is the judge, the weight of evidence is all to the contrary. His friends, and even members of his own family, are stricken with the grip, pneu monia, typhoid and like diseases, take medicine and recover; while he who, ao cording to the repeated assurance of his medical adviser, has no disease whatsoever, faithfully swallows one drug after another, and yet goes, to his own seeming, from bad to worse, both mentally and physically. After this paradoxical state of affairs has persisted for a longer or shorter space of time, he very naturally loses patience with the treatment he is receiving, forsakes orthodox methods altogether and starts out upon a search for the mythical Royal Road to Health. Book Description
Excerpt from Just Nerves This is certainly a good book on a difficult subject a sane, modest, helpful, and encouraging book based on a true philosophy of life, verified and corrected on every page by the practical experience of a successful physician to nervous in valids. Here is the point which Dr. Riggs makes clear in his booklet. Most of these in valids are real, not imaginary, sufferers. But the cause of their suffering is not so much a nervous disease as it is a nervous disorder, The way to cure that is to re establish the right order: the reasonable rule, the self-control which is the secret of spiritual and physical health. Book Description
Excerpt from Nerve Injuries and Shock An outstanding feature of the casualties in the present war is the very large number of cases of nervous exhaustion, neurasthenia, and functional paralyses of various kinds which are being met with. Many occur as the result of large shell explosions, burying the man in the blown-in parapet of a trench, or hurling him down, without any local injury, yet causing temporary unconsciousness, and leaving behind a flaccid paraplegia, or other symptoms characteristic of loss of function from nervous shock. Neglecting the Greek derivation of the word, the term hysterical paralysis may be used to describe many of these cases, instead of the wider and vaguer term functional paralysis, and this condition, with or without hysterical contracture and anaesthesia, may be superimposed upon an actual nerve injury, rendering the clinical picture bizarre and difficult to unravel to one off his guard or unfamiliar with these cases.
