Book Description
This capstone project focuses on the research and development of an arts-based after school program for educators that targets creativity, reduces stress, and builds a culture of community and connection amongst teachers. This arts-based after school program for educators entitled The Happy Art Hour is designed to be easily implemented by a school faculty or staff member regardless of their art experience. This research focuses on how the arts can serve the faculty and staff in our school communities and ignite a broader conversation in art education regarding the impactful nature of the arts. Multiple forms of data were collected and analyzed. The review of the literature explores existing supportive research regarding the need for creativity, community, and self-actualization through art by leading art educator scholars. This paper also explores contemporary studies involving the science of neuroesthetics, which offers insight into how our brains and bodies transform when we participate in the arts. Using action research methods, two arts-based activity sessions were conducted for fifteen faculty and staff members at a southeastern private school. Data was gathered through observational note taking, photographs, pre-activity, and post-activity surveys. This capstone describes the research process, findings, and recommendations. Major findings from this study were participant-identified benefits of The Happy Art Hour, these included a sense of connection amongst participating faculty and staff, an increase in feelings of well-being, and the belief that a regularly offered art-based program for faculty and staff would be helpful for stress reduction and overall wellness. The outcome of this research was the design of an art-based activity program for faculty and staff entitled The Happy Art Hour. The Happy Art Hour program is available as a website to be used by anyone wishing to build a positive school culture and assist in the well-being of its members.

Book Description
With the verve and bite of Ottessa Moshfegh and the barbed charm of Nancy Mitford, Marlowe Granados’s stunning debut brilliantly captures a summer of striving in New York City. Isa Epley, all of twenty-one years old, is already wise enough to understand that the purpose of life is the pursuit of pleasure. She arrives in New York with her newly blond best friend looking for adventure. They have little money, but that’s hardly going to stop them. By day, the girls sell clothes on a market stall, pinching pennies for their Bed-Stuy sublet and bodega lunches. By night, they weave between Brooklyn, the Upper East Side, and the Hamptons among a rotating cast of celebrities, artists, Internet entrepreneurs, stuffy intellectuals, and bad-mannered grifters. Resources run ever tighter and the strain tests their friendship as they try to convert social capital into something more lasting than precarious gigs as au pairs, nightclub hostesses, paid audience members, and aspiring foot fetish models. Through it all, Isa’s bold, beguiling voice captures the precise thrill of cultivating a life of glamour and intrigue as she juggles paying her dues with skipping out on the bill. Happy Hour is a novel about getting by and having fun in a system that wants you to do neither.
