In today’s complex and volatile world the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimize extremist behavior, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Classical Islamic sources suggest that during the lifetime of the Prophet(pbuh) and his Companions, the Sunnah had existed integrally as part of a 'living' phenomenon which his peers were encouraged to emulate. The traditional understanding was that despite earlier reservations, the Prophet (pbuh) had permitted his Companions to record his very words and deeds. However, more decisively, upon the Prophet's (pbuh) passing and the demise of his Companions, later scholarship felt compelled to safeguard his religious legacy for posterity and the move towards the codification of the reports connected with his lifetime afforded a means of physically preserving all aspects of his living legacy. Again, traditional sources refer to the role of prominent luminaries from the early periods such as the Umayyad caliph 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz (d. 99-101/717-737), Abe Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Hazm (d. 120/737) and the jurist Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (d. 124/742), all are mentioned actively involved in efforts to preserve and codify hadĭth literature and its complementary Sunna.

Since the Prophetic traditions were an important source for the development of Islamic law, Jurisprudence and Qur'anic interpretation, the community had to know which traditions were reliable, and which were clearly fraudulent. But the problems of hadĭth have led to much disunity over authenticity and have led to the development of the complex science of hadĭth because it serves as an additional link between Prophet Muhammad (pbup) and the Qur'an. One can question the authenticity of the hadĭth, which contradict the Qur'an; if one were to dismiss the whole corpus of hadĭth, the very foundations of practiced Islam would be threatened. As some orientalists have wisely remarked that, whilst they are prepared to believe that no real books were produced before A.H.120, they cannot believe that traditions before this trusted wholly to memory and had not at least written notes. In 1848 Gustav Weil, remarked that after noting that, 'al-Bukhari' deemed only 4,000 of his original 600,000 hadĭth are authentic. He also suggests that a European critic would reject at least half of these 4,000. Aloys Sprenger, who also suggests that many of the hadĭth, material cannot be considered authentic?
