Book Description
Once there was a gypsy queen who wore on her wrist a chain of six lucky charms – a golden crown, a silver horse, a butterfly caught in amber, a cat's eye shell, a bolt of lightning forged from the heart of a falling star, and the flower of the rue plant, herb of grace. The queen gave each of her six children one of the charms as their lucky talisman, but ever since the chain of charms was broken, the gypsies had been dogged with misfortune. It is even worse for the Finch tribe – they have been thrown into gaol with only three weeks to live. The only members of the family to escape are thirteen-year-old Emilia and her cousin Luka, who have been entrusted to find the six charms and bring them together again. What Emilia and Luka do not realise is that there is a price to be paid for each lucky charm, and that the cost may prove too high... Book 1: The Gypsy Crown: 9th August – 12th August 1658 Maggie has given them the first charm – an old gold coin – but Luka and Emilia must escape the brutal thief-taker, Coldham. With a horse, a monkey, a dog, and a huge brown bear in their train, it is hard to travel secretly as they flee across the Surrey countryside. With a little bit of luck – or, as Emilia believes, magic – they manage to escape, but Coldham will not give up so easily.

Book Description
Countess York was a very rich mean spoiled woman who upon her husband’s death inherited not only his wealth but also his cold-heartedness. The countess’s husband was a wealthy oil tycoon who handled all his affairs with an iron fist. The minute her husband died the countess had plenty of money to give her husband a very expensive funeral, but being taught by a man with a cold heart and an iron fist, he was lucky to have been put into a pine box and buried in the family cemetery. The countess had ice water pumping through her veins, but not enough to make her bury her husband in a shallow grave on their estate. After the funeral the Countess York immediately called the attorney's office to get on with the reading of the will. The countess even showed up early for the reading, continually knocking on the attorney's door asking, are you done yet? She also frantically paced back and forth by the door. Finally, the door opened and the countess burst inside and sat down in front of the attorney's desk and said "let's get on with it. I haven't got all day." The attorney replied, "Since there are no living relatives left but you, everything has been left to you." The Countess York replied, "Where do I sign." The countess signed the legal documents and gathered her things, went back to the estate to clear her husband’s things out of the closet, when she spotted a fairly large box. The countess opened the box in amazement, of what she had just found. "It's a crown of jewels. This must be worth a fortune, said the countess." It was her wicked grandmother's crown. One thing that slipped the countesses mind was that the crown was cursed by a gypsy woman that was slain by her father to cover up the affair they were having. Just before he slit his mistress throat, she put a curse on the crown of jewels, that if anyone would dare to put on the crown, they will surely die.

Roma-Gypsy Presence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
Author: Lech Mróz
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 9633861098
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
This is an analysis of 166 original and previously unpublished documents dating from the very first mention of a Gypsy in 1401 up to the year 1 765. These documents range from royal decrees thru lawsuits to entries in municipal records. Some were written in Polish but many are in Latin, German or Ruthenian. They tell the story of not only the Gypsies living in Poland, but also of those who now live in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine. Though Poland has not traditionally had a large Roma population, the author leads the reader through an eventful history of a people living on the margins of contemporary Europe. The historic documents illustrate a marked contrast to present stereotypes and popular media images and shows how the position of Roma/Gypsies shifted gradually from respected, wealthy and partly settled citizens of the early modern times, towards criminalized vagrants of the 18 th century. This is a careful interpretation and re-interpretation of documents pertaining to the Roma's past that will provide an enlightening historical perspective towards the re-evaluation and self-definition of the Romani people in contemporary Europe.

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315490234
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
In recent news coverage of the dramatic political events in Eastern Europe, Gypsies have been a favourite sidebar topic. Some of the stories have been truly horrifying, others are written condescendingly and to amuse; but what has become clear is how little we really know about this people. In a concerted effort to uncover the modern history of the Rom in Eastern Europe, the authors examine the Gypsy experience in Albania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia, with special attention to the Nazi Holocaust as well as to the record of the forced settlement and education programmes instituted by communist regimes.
