Book Description
William A. Wallace, executive officer on the famous SS Great Eastern, gives a fascinating account of the vessel's first voyage to North America in 1860. Believing the Great Eastern to have enlisted the sympathy of the British public generally; and I may say of the whole civilized world; I think it not out of place, on the satisfactory completion of her first voyage across the Atlantic, to publish a brief, but plain and unvarnished account of her doings; and the fact of my having had the honour of assisting in the navigation of this noble specimen of naval architecture to the shores of the New World and back to the Old Country, will, I trust, be a sufficient excuse for my presumption. Reprint of the original edition from 1860.

Book Description
At the time of her launch in 1858, the iron steam ship Great Eastern was the largest ship ever built. It would take more than forty years until her length of nearly 700 feet and tonnage of 22.550 tons were beaten by another ship. She had been designed by the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and became known all over the world for her modern look. Commercially, the Great Eastern was a disappointment. A series of accidents, starting with an explosion during her maiden voyage, ended her short career as passenger liner between Britain and the United States. In the second half of the 1860s she was transformed into a cable-laying ship and placed transatlantic telegraph cables for several years. Afterwards, the Great Eastern became a floating music hall and advertising space in Liverpool before she was broken up in 1889.This little book, descriptive of the >wonder of the worldof the deepThe Great EasternGreat Ship

The Great Rift Valleys of Pangea in Eastern North America: Tectonics, structure, and volcanism
Author: Peter M. LeTourneau
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231111622
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
The breakup of the Pangean supercontinent in the Triassic-Jurassic age left great rift basins containing an extraordinary record of the physical and biological conditions which precipitated a major extinction event at the time. These basins collectively form a rift province called the Central Atlantic Margin, which spans more than 45 degrees of paleolatitude and records over 35 million years of Earth history. Leading experts present a detailed review of the rift province's geology, paleobiology, and geophysics. This extensive two-volume work offers in-depth coverage of the North American components of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. In volume 1, leading researchers give thorough reviews and highlight recent advances in our understanding of the structural geology, tectonics, and volcanism of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.
