Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel in the Old Testament The events of the past six years have served to bring into clearer relief the permanent religious value of much of the Old Testament teaching, and many of the sermons stand in relation to burning questions which were directly raised by the war, and form as it were landmarks of stages in the crisis through which we have passed. These have been allowed to remain as they were written, on the view that their applica tion to the special circumstances of the moment would illustrate the more clearly the abiding moral and spiritual importance of the Old Testament. Their grouping under this aspect may be gathered from the dates which are given in the Table of Contents. As arranged in the book they follow the natural Old Testament order; and it has happened, without special design, that they offer an outline of Old Testament history in relation to religious thought which is fairly continuous for a considerable period.1 Thus the writer hopes that the book may not be without value as a brief introduction to the historical study of Old Testament religion. The writer's thanks are due to the editor of the Interpreter for permission to reprint Sermons V. And VI. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book Description
"Can the Gospel really be found in every book of the Old Testament? Yes, it can in all 39 books, with a chapter devoted to each. While other books have focused on foreshadows and glimpses of Messiah Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures, Joseph Farah set out to find the Good News of redemption, repentance, restoration and resurrection. The result is a great resource for pastoral sermons, a reference for group Bible studies, a re-introduction to the everlasting relevance of the Old Testament to all Christians, as well as a breezy, non-scholarly read that will inspire and reinvigorate your faith in the miraculous nature of God s Word -- one cohesive, integrated message in 66 books written by 40 different people over a period of 1,500 years"--Amazon

Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book Description
We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.

Book Description
The Bible in the English language is among the great achievements of all time, not only as a masterpiece of inspired writing but as a witness to the place of the Scriptures in the life of the English-speaking peoples, and Bruce's work, recognised for 30 years as the best on its subject, documents its history and shows the impact of some of the translations on the use and development of the English language. Formerly The English Bible, this comprehensive study of the various English translationsof the Bible is again available in paperback. The author traces the story from the earliest partial translations in Saxon times, through Wycliffe, Tyndale and The King James Version, to the publication of such contemporary versions as The New English Bible, The New American Standard Version, The Living Bible, and The Good News Bible. Authoritative and highly readable, this remains one of the standard works on its subject.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel in All Lands, 1893 Let us not be guilty of fearing for our Bible. It has survived the shocks of eighteen centuries, and now it sways more human hearts than ever. In our own time controversies have broken over it like fierce summer atoms, which only brighten and enrich the face of the landscape they threaten to ruin. For a little while the theory of evolution was confidently affirmed to have shaken a strong ground for our belief in the Bible; it was soon made clear that it had only strengthened it. For fifty years unsparing criticism played upon the historical Christ it only brought him nearer and made his glory more visible to men. Hostile investigation has contributed to our knowledge of the New Testament and has left its credit and authority unimpaired, and now the Old Testament is passing through the same fire. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel of John The Gospel of John is perhaps the best loved and most frequently read of any of the gospels. Recent scholarship has thrown much light upon the authorship and purpose of this gospel and the part which it played in the developing thought and life Of the early Christians. Investigation, although modifying some current views of this gospel, has added greatly to its value as a Christian document. Viewed in the light of its origin and purpose, it becomes replete with life, not only the life of the Master and his disciples, but with the intellectual and spiritual struggles Of the Christians of the hundred years following the death of Jesus. This course presents the gospel in the light of recent scholarship but simply and for the study of individuals and groups, in the home, church, or the com munity. It is one of the Outline bible-study Courses prepared by the American Institute of Sacred Literature, twelve similar courses being mentioned on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference.
