Book Description
This children's chapter book for 7-9 year-olds offers an exciting woodland adventure set in Ireland. It is the fourth in the Gollogans series, which has been written to promote a love of reading and a love of nature. Giants aren't all bad, are they? In the last book of the Gollogans series Daffi is on a fact-finding mission with Evie and Jake in Dublin. What can gollogans and giants learn from each other? And how will Daffi cope when she gets lost in Stephen’s Green?! "Helen O’Sullivan has created an enchanting world, made all the more captivating by her storytelling. I can see this becoming a series children will read again and again." Pauline Tait, author of 'The Fairy in the Kettle.' EDITORIAL REVIEW A Gollogan (Daffi) sets off to Dublin in this latest fun adventure from the talented pen of Helen O'Sullivan. Written for 7 – 9 year olds, this is a sweetly written, often whimsical story, which not only gallops along at speed, but also has time to educate the young reader on subjects such as rubbish (trash for the Americans amongst us) and nature. There were a number of elements to this story I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, Daffi (the protagonist) is a wonderful character; so much so, you can’t help but love her. She’s a lot of fun to follow, and root for, as she uncovers the secrets ot a giants’ city. Giants, of course, being you and me – humans! Secondly, it’s so very accessibly written with a perfect balance of humour and adventure for young readers to enjoy. And, thirdly, the illustrations by David Hallangen compliment the book perfectly, adding oomph to an already oomph-filled story. So, if you happen to be on the hunt for a cleverly plotted adventure/drama packed with twists and turns and a lot of memorable characters, you can’t go too far wrong with The Gollogans in Summer. I would particularly recommend it to reluctant readers; I think they’ll like the accessibility of the vocabulary and the unpredictability of the plot. All in all, a FAB read! ‘Wishing Shelf’ Book Review www.thewsa.co.uk
