Book Description
The First New Science gives a clear account of Vico's mature philosophy: the belief that certain functions which are necessary for the maintenance of human society and culture, including philosophy, also condition them historically. This challenges the traditional view that philosophy can lay claim to an historically independent viewpoint, thus bringing into question the legitimacy of the claims of universal prescriptive political theories as against the de facto political beliefs of particular historical societies. This is the first of Vico's later major books in which he wrote in Italian in order not merely to expound but to demonstrate in practice, his conception of the philosophical importance of etymology. This 2002 Cambridge Texts edition is the first complete English translation of the 1725 text. Accompanied by a glossary, bibliography, chronology of Vico's life and expository introduction, it makes this important work accessible to students for the first time.

Book Description
What if you could remember a past life? Or worse, what if you couldn't? Born in 1875 and raised in a Scottish orphanage, Abigail is about to turn fifteen—an age where she will be cast out of the only home she has ever known—no matter how horrid. The day before they force her to leave behind the only life she has known to enter an uncertain future, a mysterious wooden box arrives requesting she travel to London to meet with a lawyer by the name of Henry Malcolm. Abigail is thrown into a world she is fearful of—while events from the past of which she has no control or influence could change the course of her life in ways she never expected. A reluctant journey taking her across the ocean to Melbourne, Australia, sees friendships formed that will last a lifetime—but leaves Abigail even more confused by the auras she has seen since she could first remember. Surprised by the golden glow surrounding many of the new souls she meets along the way, she wonders if they know something she doesn't. Only to find the further she travels from home, the more common they become, Abigail dives deeper into the mystery of these auras, soon discovering they could hold the answer to who she truly is—and what darkness hides in the past of which she has no control or influence. Mastery's End
Author: Jeffrey Gray
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 9780820326634
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Focusing on lyric poetry, Mastery's End looks at important, yet neglected, issues of subjectivity in post-World War II travel literature. Jeffrey Gray departs from related studies in two regards: nearly all recent scholarly books on the literature of travel have dealt with pre-twentieth-century periods, and all are concerned with narrative genres. Gray questions whether the postcolonial theoretical model of travel as mastery, hegemony, and exploitation still applies. In its place he suggests a model of vulnerability, incoherence, and disorientation to reflect the modern destabilizing nature of travel, a process that began with the unprecedented movement of people during and after World War II and has not abated since. What the contemporary discourse concerning displacement, border crossing, and identity needs, says Gray, is a study of that literary genre with the least investment in closure and the least fidelity to ethnic and national continuities. His concern is not only with the psychological challenges to identity but also with travel as a mode of understanding and composition. Following a summary of American critical perspectives on travel from Emerson to the present, Gray discusses how travel, by nature, defamiliarizes and induces heightened awareness. Such phenomena, Gray says, correspond to the tenets of modern poetics: traversing territories, immersing the self in new object worlds, reconstituting the known as unknown. He then devotes a chapter each to four of the past half-century's most celebrated English-speaking, western poets: Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, John Ashbery, and Derek Walcott. Finally, two multi-poet chapters examine the travel poetry of Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, and Robert Creeley, Lyn Hejinian, Nathaniel Mackey and others.

“A necessary piece in a literary California collection” with new work from Tommy Orange, Rabih Alamdeddine, Mai Der Vang, Jennifer Egan, and others (Los Angeles Times). A Concordance to the Poems of W.B. Yeats
Author: Stephen Maxfield Parrish
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501742892
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 1014
Book Description
Now it is possible for the first time to trace in a systematic way the language patterns of one of the greatest poets who have written in English, W. B. Yeats. Like A Concordance to the Poems of Matthew Arnold, the first of the Cornell Concordances that are under the general editorship of Professor Parrish, this volume was produced on an IBM 704 electronic data-processing machine. Computer technique has so advanced that the Yeats concordance includes punctuation and gives cross references for the second parts of hyphenated words. The frequency of every word in Yeats's poems is given, and an appendix lists all indexed words in order of frequency. The body of this book consists of an index of all significant words in Yeats, each word listed in the line or lines in which it occurs. The concordance is based on the variorum text of Yeats, edited by Alspach and Allt, and includes all variants that occur in printed versions of Yeats's poems.
