Book Description
Excerpt from The Geology of Colonsay and Oronsay: With Part of the Ross of Mull, (Explanation of Sheet 35, With Part of 27) Colonsay is one of the smaller islands of the Inner Hebrides. Lying nearly half-way between Islay and Mull, Opposite the entrance Of the Firth of Lorne, it is within a few hours' sail of Oban, but owing to its exposed situation and the absence of any properly protected harbours it is sometimes in the winter season for weeks together out of communication with the mainland except by telegraph. In summer, however, it is seldom that any difficulty is found in landing. Viewed from the sea, Colonsay presents a rocky and barren aspect, giving little clue to the fertility of the interior, which in summer sup ports vegetation Of a luxuriance not often met with in the Western Isles. The scenery of the island presents many points of great beauty. Its hills and cliffs, though never attaining very magnificent pro portions, are not without a certain rugged grandeur, which contrasts most pleasingly with the richness of its valleys and the yellow sands of its shores.
