Excerpt from The Geological Record: For 1876, an Account of Works on Geology, Mineralogy, and Palæontology Published During the Year, With Supplements for 1874 and 1875 Although 28 pages smaller than our last Volume (but as much larger than the first), this third Geological Record contains about a dozen more notices. The saving of space is partly owing to many of the long lists of newly described fossils not having been printed in the abstracts of work, but only in the "Index of Species." This experiment, however, has given be much trouble and so little satisfaction that it will not be continued. The only other changes are the addition of new names of Rocks and Minerals to the "Index of Species," and the shifting of that Index to the end of the text, so that the two Indices come together. The number of journals consulted has increased, as may be seen from the many additional to the "List of Contractions;" but we have still much difficulty in seeing many journals; and I therefore again ask for help in this matter from Societies, Editors, and Authors. Another thing needful for continued success is more Subscribers; and these ought to be forthcoming, as no addition has been made to the low subscription, though there are more than a hundred pages in such volume beyond the maximum of 300 originally promised. Excerpt from The Geological Record for 1874: An Account of Works of Geology, Mineralogy, and Palæontology Published During the Year The first work that should be recorded in this the first volume of the Geological Record is that of its Sub-Editors and Contributors, who have done their self-imposed task so zealously as to greatly lighten my own editorial duties, although at the same time increasing the size of the book to about a third more than the original estimate. A word of thanks is also due to those gentlemen who came forward as Guarantors, in order to insure the expense of the work. It is most satisfactory, however, that their office proves to be purely honorary, the number of Subscribers being large enough to cover the cost of publication. The British Association having now voted a grant towards the expenses of the Geological Record, we shall be relieved from financial anxiety in future. It was, of course, impossible to compile such a book without some sort of classification; and the plan adopted is as simple as could be devised. Under each heading works are arranged alphabetically after the authors' names, except Maps, which are in the alphabetical order of places. There are altogether more than 2000 entries.
