Men commit crimes. Men are violent. Men start wars. Men have power. In Paying for Masculinity, Murray Knuttila argues that male dominance is best understood in the context of the particular mode of gender practice -- hegemonic masculinity -- that typifies patriarchal gender orders. This mode of masculinity permeates our society, media and culture. It persists because of "the patriarchal dividend" -- men directly benefit from their dominance in society. But these benefits exact a price, first and foremost from women and girls. But, as boys and men are under pressure to "man up," they too pay the costs: they die younger, go to prison, restrict their emotions and blunt their humanity. Simply put, men need to understand that the costs of practising this mode of masculinity far outweigh the benefits. Knuttila's conceptual framework allows him to trace the history of the patriarchal dividend through various aspects of patriarchal capitalism, demonstrating how ingrained it is in our society, and to illustrate ways of encouraging non-hegemonic forms of masculinity, which are ultimately to the benefit of everyone.

This book examines potential economic opportunities that countries can experience when fertility rates fall and the average life expectancy of the working age population increases. It presents detailed demographic and economic analysis of middle-income countries throughout the world in order to show how these countries can take advantage of this demographic bonus. The book first traces the common link between policies that contribute to fertility transition as well as create the right kind of environment for reaping the benefit of demographic dividend. Next, it explores different countries and regions who are at different levels of development. It assesses the long term impact of gender equality on economic growth and development in Latin America; describes the life-cycle saving patterns of Mexican households; and examines demographic determinants of economic growth in BRICS. The book also offers demographic and economic analysis of the Mediterranean area, Sub-Saharan Africa, and New Zealand. The comparison between the different territorial contexts allow for the identification of three typologies of demographic dividend: the first dividend, when the working population grows faster than total population, the second dividend, as active generations get older and invest their savings in the production system of their country, and the third dividend, based on the coexistence of two populations age structure strongly contrasting. Overall, this book argues for the need to capitalize on the opportunities that come from the demographic dividend by investing heavily in education programs, training programs for the population working age, health programs, the creation of health insurance systems as well as programs to reduce or increase fertility levels.

India, with its rich mix of cultures, traditions, and history, is currently the world’s most populous nation and is home to over 1.4 billion people. Such vast demographic might easily be perceived as a daunting challenge, particularly in challenges like resource allocation, job creation, and infrastructural development. Yet, beneath the massive challenge is a treasure trove of opportunities. The gender dividend, achievable through targeted empowerment of women and girls, can contribute to sustainable development. Women, constituting almost half of the nation’s population, possess a myriad of skills, perspectives, and values. Empirical studies have consistently shown that societies which prioritise women’s education and health and promote their economic and political participation tend to be more prosperous and just. The journey to harness this demographic and gender dividend is fraught with complexities. Socio-cultural norms, economic disparities, and the historical context play pivotal roles in shaping the narrative. On 28 August 2023, ORF organised a closed-door roundtable titled Harnessing India’s Demographic and Gender Dividend, in partnership with the Economic Advisory Council to the PM and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to emphasise the imperative to bridge research and policy gaps. The global implications of India’s choices, especially at this juncture, cannot be overstated; as a nation, the decisions we make now will resonate within our borders and create ripple effects beyond.
