Excerpt from Everything for the Garden, 1900 This is a most valuable introduction. We have had it in our trial grounds for several seasons, and believe it to be quite distinct, and we are thoroughly convinced of its value either for private use or as a market sort. The root is not large, averaging about 3 inches in diameter, but is of very handsome shape, being quite round. With a clean, smooth surface and, small tap-root. Book Description
Excerpt from The Garden Party Quiet had frightened them. Behind them an Old sheep-dog, his soaking paws covered with sand, ran along with his nose to the ground, but carelessly, as if thinking of something else. And then in the rocky gateway the shepherd himself appeared. He was a lean, upright Old man, in a frieze coat that was covered with a web Of tiny drops, velvet trousers tied under the knee, and a wide-awake with a folded blue handkerchief round the brim. One hand was crammed into his belt, the other grasped a beautifully smooth yellow stick. And as he walked, taking his time, he kept up a very soft light whistling, an airy, far-away fluting that sounded mournful and tender. The old dog cut an ancient caper or two and then drew up sharp. Book Description
Excerpt from The Garden of the Plynck It is certainly an underhand way of suggesting that you stop doing something pleasant, or begin doing something unpleasant; and you would not have thought that Sara's dear mother would have had so unworthy a habit. But a stern regard for the truth compels me to admit that she had. You see, Sara's dear mother was, indeed, most dear; but very self willed and contrary. Her great fault was that she was always busy at something. She would dam, and she would write, and she would read dark-colored books without pictures. When Sara compared her with other mothers of her acquaintance, or when this very contrary own mother went away for a day, she seemed indeed to Sara quite desper ately perfect. But on ordinary days Sara was darkly aware, in the clearest part of her mind - the upper right-hand corner near the window - that her mother, with all her charm, really did need to be remoulded nearer to her heart's desire. She was especially clear about this on the frequent occasions when she would come into the room where her mother was sitting, and plump down upon a chair with a heart-tending sigh, and say, I wish I had somebody to play with! For then her dear but most contrary mother would glance up from her book or her darning and remark, with a calm smile. Book Description
Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
