Book Description
Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 4 In the month of October of the year 1783 the hero of a certain famous in famous fiction entered Paris for the first time by the Faubourg Saint-Marceau. 'I sought, ' he says, 'that stately city of which I had read such wonderful accounts. I found but high and squalid tenements, long and ludicrously narrow streets, poor wretches every were cloth the rags, a crowed of well-night naked children; I beheld a dense population, and appalling poverty. I asked my father if that was indeed Paris; he answered coldly that it was certainly not the finest quarter; on the morrow we should have time to see another.'These sentence, almost the opening sentence of the once renowned romance of 'Faublas, ' make a strangely appropriate text for any study of or any speculation upon the French Revolution. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 4 M. Thiers here alludes to Carnot, who, to quote the language of Napoleon, organized victory. This eminent republican was a member of the frightful Committee of Public 'safety, but it has been said in his defence, observes a competent authority, that he did not meddle with in atrocities, limiting himself entirely to the war department, for which he thawed so much. Talent, tint his colleagues left it to his exclusive management. He fim daringly claimed for France her natural boundaries; and be conquered by his genius the countries which his ambition claimed. E. Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 3 Grezt was the joy at the Jacobins. Its members congratulated themselves on the energy of the people, on their late admirable conduct, and on the removal of all those obstacles which the right side had not ceased to oppose to the progress of the Revolution. According to the custom after all great events, they agreed upon the manner in which the last insurrection should be represented. The people, said Robespierre, have confounded all their calumniators by their conduct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 3 I regret, but can hardly apologize for, the delay in the publication of the present Volume. A Paradise haunts the dreams of the Historian, as well as of the Lover and the Fool. To glide through happy, laborious years in the eloquent silence of his library, free from the necessity for that ungrateful literary drudgery, from which he escapes only by fits and starts - in feverish haste, the balance and continuity of his ideas well-nigh lost, - to some cherished work, often laid aside, long neglected, and at last almost despaired of; to feel himself, as it were, a lily of the field, neither bound to toil nor spin Solomon-raiment for himself, but only for his thoughts; to enjoy the inestimable boon of scholarly leisure, roaming through archives and collections, with no call to grudge the hours which slip by as one investigation branches off into a hundred equally as enticing, ruminating some doubtful point, or rounding some awkward period in his twilight garden or beside his friendly study fire; to concentrate his every thought upon the magnum opus, towards which all his studies have for years been tending, which he sees daily growing under his pen, big with the promise of future fame; ever busily improving, reviewing, and revising, till shortly he becomes his best, and gives of his best to the world, and of his best only. Book Description
Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 2 But human beings are seldom logical as individuals, and never logical in the mass. The Parisian mob did not reason closely when it attacked the Bastille. The world did not discriminate finely between cause and effect when it heard of the fall of the Bastille. The fact that the Bastille had long ceased to be an evil prison is of very little moment compared with the fact that an insurgent mob chose to regard it as an evil prison. The innocence of its old age may be established beyond dispute, but it is no less beyond dispute that in 1789 a large number of people chose to regard it as a symbol of the old order which they hated, chose to re gard its overthrow as one of the strongest as it was one of the earliest blows struck at the supremacy of the old order. When Fox described the taking of the Bastille as the greatest event in history, he did not merely exult over the easy capture of an antiquated stronghold: he would not have altered his judgment even if he had been assured that it had long been disused to iniquity, that its torture-chambers and its dungeons were things of the past, and that the dreaded institution of the Let tres de Cachet would soon have existed only in memory. The taking of the Bastille afi'mded the people of Paris the first proof of the weakness of authority and the strength of the mob. Whether the obtaining of that proof be rejoiced at or bewailed over, the fact that it was so obtained makes the day's work of July 14 inevi tably and rightly momentous.
