A measurement of the production cross section for a top quark pair in association with a Z boson (ttZ) is presented in this PhD thesis. Final states with exactly three charged leptons (electrons or muons) are used, taking into account the decay of the top quark pair in the lepton+jets channel and the decay of the Z boson into two charged leptons. This paper presents cross sections for the production of a W boson in association with jets, measured in proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s} = 7\) TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the large hadron collider. With an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. As a result, the measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.

This Letter presents a measurement of the W+W- production cross section in [arrow]" = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 inverse pb-1 of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7"0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41+20-16(stat) " 5(syst) " 1(lumi) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44 " 3 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.

The first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (A[sub LR]) in Z[sup 0] boson production has been made with the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy (E[sub cm]) of 91.55 GeV with a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization was (22.4 [+-] 0.6)%. Using a sample of 10,224 Z[sup 0] decays, A[sub LR] is measured to be 0.102 [+-] 0.O44(stat) [+-] 0.003(syst), which determines the effective electroweak mixing angle to be sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2375 [+-] 0.0056(stat) [+-] 0.0004(syst).
