Privileged migrants, such as expatriates living abroad, are typically associated with lives of luxury in exotic locations. This fascinating and in-depth study reveals a more complex reality. By focusing on corporate expatriates the author provides one of the first book length studies on 'transnationalism from above'. The book draws on the author's extended research among the expatriate community in Jakarta, Indonesia. The findings, which relate to expatriate communities worldwide, provide a nuanced analysis of current trends among a globally mobile workforce. When writing my inaugural novel, "Legend of the last Vikings - Taklamakan" set in the late 1060's and early 1070's AD, I came across article after article of forced and voluntary migrations of groups of people, indeed nations which were moved from one location on our planet to another - and this is not a recent phenomenon. After completing and publishing my book, to acclaim, this subject still held my interest, so in 2010 I compiled a short synopsis of these movements always asking the question - who were the first expats? It is only 54 pages and not worthy of an ISBN so I published it on Smashwords as FREE ebook. I was surprised to see some favourable comments posted to the booklet. Now 6 years on, I have decided it was time to refresh the doc, which I have done for two reasons. 1. The Brexit campaign, or lack of it and 2. the election of Donald Trump into the Whitehouse. Both of these events had immigration, or should I say the fear of immigration, as core elements. What this booklet does is show how immigration and migration has been happening for centuries, eons and even millennia. Yes the wholesale influx of people has caused some disruption but equilibrium has always returned and the cycle of life has gone on. In this wide-ranging consideration of intellectual diasporas, historian Peter Burke questions what distinctive contribution to knowledge exiles and expatriates have made. The answer may be summed up in one word: deprovincialization. Historically, the encounter between scholars from different cultures was an education for both parties, exposing them to research opportunities and alternative ways of thinking. Deprovincialization was in part the result of mediation, as many ŽmigrŽs informed people in their "hostland" about the culture of the native land, and vice versa. The detachment of the exiles, who sometimes viewed both homeland and hostland through foreign eyes, allowed them to notice what scholars in both countries had missed. Yet at the same time, the engagement between two styles of thought, one associated with the exiles and the other with their hosts, sometimes resulted in creative hybridization, for example, between German theory and Anglo-American empiricism. This timely appraisal is brimming with anecdotes and fascinating findings about the intellectual assets that exiles and immigrants bring to their new country, even in the shadow of personal loss.
