Book Description
Excerpt from The First Book, Word and Sentence Work, Easy Steps in Spelling Suggestions to Teachers. - This book should be put into the pupils hands as soon as possible after he begins to read. It will not only prove invaluable as a Spelling-Book, doing the legitimate work of impressing forms of words on the pupils mind, but will also aid in teaching pupil's to read, both because sentence-copying and sentence-spelling are combined with word forms, and because Reading Exercises and, later, Sentence Exercises for Dictation are given, repeating in sentences the words previously shown in script or type. First Month. - Before a lesson is assigned to the pupils, read aloud the words under the pictures, very distinctly, and call on the pupils, in concert and individually, to read them after you. Be sure that each pupil sees the word he reads, and pronounces it correctly. When you are confident that each pupil knows the forms of these words, call on the class to find them in the lines under the pictures, in the Copying Exercise, and, after the first lesson, in the Reading Exercise also. Next, if the pupils know their letters, call on the class, individually and collectively, to spell the words orally from the book, and, when this is well done, let each pupil spell the words orally with the book closed. If the pupils do not know their letters, pronounce each word, name the letters that compose it, and call on the pupils to do the same; e. g.: Teacher. Cat - c, a, t, cat. Pupil. Cat - c, a, t, cat. Go over the three words in each lesson several times in this way with the books open, and then let each pupil pronounce and spell each word with the books closed. When this work is thoroughly done, write one of the words plainly on the board, and call on some pupil to pronounce and spell it. Write the second and the third word in the same way, leaving a little space before each word. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Howell First Reader All the spellings in the howell primer are repeated in this book; and for any child it is a complete introduction to reading in the English language. When he masters the howell first reader, he can read anything he may have occasion to read. For the beginner in this series does more than learn mere words; he learns the spelling ele ments, and thus becomes an independent reader. This book begins with the spellings taught in the howell primer; pages 9 - 20 contain nothing new in the way of spelling to the child that has mastered the Primer, though some new words are met with here. The method is the same as that of the Primer only one new spelling element is taught at a time thus the grading is regular and easy. Without taking too much space for a discussion of methods of teaching (which would be unfair to the purchasers of a book for children), the author would urge teachers to see that their pupils learn the word lists; review them often; a mastery of them will give pupils power to read not only this book, but any other book. Do not however, require beginners to learn by heart the spelling of all these words if elementary pupils can read them easily, that is enough to expect. A manual on the teaching of elementary reading, with special application to the howell primer and the howell first reader, is in preparation. Book Description
Excerpt from First Reader: With 4, 000 Words for Spelling by Sound This series of school books is based upon the principle that children may be taught to spell and read by sound thousands of English words as easily as words are taught in German schools. The method has long been followed in schools under the author's supervision and in the direction of the education of his children at home. The present irrational mode of spelling some English words and the unscientific methods often employed in teaching all our words have frequently proven an insuperable barrier against the acquisition of a knowledge of the art of reading by a large class of children who have not been able to go to school long enough to learn how to read with sufficient ease and fluency to gain a love of literature before they must leave school to engage in the fierce struggle of bread-winning. To change irrational spelling is beyond our power, but to pursue a scientific mode of teaching reading is open to all teachers. The phonic method of teaching children to read the many regular words in our language should not be ignored because, in a comparatively small number of our words, "there has been a departure from the unitary sounds of the vowels." There are irregularities in some German words, but because of this fact no teacher would think of returning to such irrational devices as "the word method," "the sentence method," or "the alphabetic method" in Prussia, where the sounds of the letters of the printed words have been universally used in teaching reading for about three-quarters of a century. The word language itself shows that it was to be learned primarily through the tongue by an appeal to the ear and not to the eye. By the use of the sound method, a child learns to read through his own efforts, and thus, by becoming a discoverer, is allowed to gain the mental power that follows such a course, and is not deprived of the genuine pleasure to which he is justly entitled. Again, by the use of the phonic method, letters are used for the identical purpose for which they were invented - "to represent a sound or an element of speech."
