Book Description
The Finnish Lapphund is a medium-sized breed of dog that is a member of the Spitz typing. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Lapinkoira Suomenlapinkoira' in its native country of Finland. Despite being an incredibly popular breed within Finland and other Nordic countries, the Finnish Lapphund is relatively rare in the other countries of the world. The Finnish Lapphund lineage is that of a female wolf-male dog hybridization that occurred post-domestication around 3000 years ago. The breed was originally developed to be a reindeer herder for the Sami people. The Sami are an indigenous people who reside in areas that are now classified as Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia. The Sami have used dogs to herd reindeer for centuries and have always prioritized breeds with long bodies of a rectangular shape, long haired coats and long straight tail that has the ability to curl over the dog's back. The Finnish Lapphund is the most similar modern breed to that of the long haired reindeer herders developed by the Sami people. The Finnish Lapphund is a compactly built muscular breed with large, pricked and highly mobile ears. The breed also has a profuse double coat with a short, fluffy undercoat and a longer top coat. The breed;s double coat allows them to be virtually waterproof and have a high resistence to extreme cold. The breed also has a large amount of hair around its neck which gives the impression of a lion's mane. Due to their history and background in herding, the Finnish Lapphund is a highly energetic breed that excels in dog agility trials, mushing, carting and herding events at dog shows. The Finnish Lapphund is also incredibly intelligent and obedient which makes training the breed relatively easy. The breed is also known to be incredibly friendly, good natured, gentle, alert and loyal. However they do have a tendency to bark at strangers, unknown dogs and unfamiliar things. The Finnish Lapphund is a perfect choice for families with children as they are incredibly adaptable and responsive. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. Book Description
The Dachshund (colloquially known as 'The Sausage Dog') is a breed of short-legged and long-bodied hound dog. The standard size Dachshund was bred to flush out badgers, and other burrow dwelling animals. In fact the word 'Dachs, ' in German, means 'Badger.' The miniature Dachshund was bred to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits and prairie dogs. Standard sized Dachshunds weigh between 16 and 32 pounds (7 to 14kg) when fully grown. Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds (5kg) and under. If a Dachshund weighs between 11 and 16 pounds (5 to 7kg), it is referred to as a Tweenie. The breed has three different types of coat: shorthaired, wirehaired and longhaired. Due to their small size, interesting appearance and lively disposition, the Dachshund has become one of the most popular household dog breeds. Book Description
Flat-Coated Retriever is a breed of gun-dog that originates from, and was developed in, the United Kingdom. The breed was developed in the mid-19th century to be a retriever that is capable of retrieving prey both on land and in the water. The Flat-Coated Retriever is believed to be a descendant of the now extinct St. John's Water Dog which originated from North America. However it is also believed that the Flat-Coated Retriever is also related to the Canadian Newfoundland (a Collie-type dog) and the Setter. The Newfoundland blood was used to give the Flat-Coated Retriever an increased level of trainability whereas the Setter blood was used to give the Flat-Coated Retriever an enhanced ability to scent prey. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a strong muscular jaw and a relatively long muzzle which makes it extremely capable of carrying birds and upland game. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a unique head which is described as being 'of one piece, ' which means that its back-skull is a similar length to its muzzle. The Flat-Coated Retriever has dark brown, almond shaped eyes which give the breed an intelligent and friendly expression. The breed has relatively small ears that hang close the dog's head in a pendant shape. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a light body build than most other Retrievers which aids in the breed's ability to be lighter on its feet, racier and have a more elegant appearance. The Flat-Coated Retriever's coat comes in a solid black or a solid liver (brownish-red) coloration. The breed's coat is straight, moderately long and dense which allows the Flat-Coated Retriever to be protected from all types of weather conditions, water and ground cover. The breed has a lot of feather across its ears, chest, front, backs of its forelegs, underside and tail which aids in the coat's protective function. Due to the fact that it is a Retriever, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a highly intelligent and energetic breed. It is therefore important to make sure that you properly exercise your Flat-Coated Retriever (both physically and mentally) as it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or having an abundance of energy. However the Flat-Coated Retriever is also a highly trainable and eager to please breed that excels in obedience related activities. Due to the fact that the Flat-Coated Retriever is incredibly loyal, friendly and trainable, it makes a perfect household pet as it is very easy to socialize with children, strangers and other household pets.
The Lhasa Apso is a companion breed of dog that originates from Tibet and is believed to be over 4000 years old. In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso is known as the 'Apso Seng Kyl, ' which translates to the 'Bearded Lion Dog.' The breed was developed for the purposes of being a household, or a monetary, sentinel that was tasked with letting people know if any intruders enter the property. The Lhasa Apso has an incredible sense of hearing and a loud sharp bark, which makes it a perfect burglar alarm. Traditionally in Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was never sold and the only way to obtain one was for it to be received as a gift. The Lhasa Apso breed was introduced to the United States of America in 1933, when Thubten Gyatso, 13th Dalai Lama gifted a pair of Lhasa Apso to C. Suydam Cutting. Due to the fact that the Lhasa Apso was developed in incredibly harsh conditions found within the Himalaya region, the breed is surprisingly hardy and long living. The Lhasa Apso is known for its unique looking coat. The breed's coat has a heavy and hard texture and the hairs lie straight. It is considered a fault if a Lhasa Apso coat is wooly or silky to the touch. The breed's coat comes in a wide variety of colorations that includes black, white, red and various shades of gold. Despite the breed having a dense long haired coat it is actually considered to be a hypo-allergenic breed. This is due to the fact that the Lhasa Apso's coat hair is relatively heavy which decreases the chance of airborne hairs, dander and allergens. The Lhasa Apso's coat shed continuously in a similar fashion to human hair. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Lhasa Apso. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Lhasa Apso with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Lhasa Apso is affectionate, intelligent, independent and assertive. The breed is incredibly loyal towards its family unit but is highly suspicious of strangers, due to their history as a sentinel dog.
The Italian Greyhound is a small breed of dog that is a member of the sighthound typing. The breed is commonly referred to as 'Iggy' or simply as the 'I.G.' The breed's name, the Italian Greyhound, is a reference to the breed's popularity in Renaissance Italy. Mummified dogs, very similar to the Italian Greyhound, have been found in Egypt and clay pictorials of small Greyhound like dogs have been found in Pompeii - which means that the Italian Greyhound is most likely not a native Italian breed. The Italian Greyhound is believed to have originated over 2000 years ago. The Italian Greyhound is the smallest member of the sighthound typing and are considered to be a 'toy' breed. The Italian Greyhound has a deep chest, long slender legs and a long neck that tapers down to its small head. The breed's face is pointed in a similar fashion to a full sized Greyhound - the breed is actually aesthetically a miniature version of the Greyhound. While many Italian owners dispute the term 'Miniature Greyhound, ' the American Kennel Club states that the Italian Greyhound have the same genetic bloodline as the Greyhound. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Italian Greyhound. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Italian Greyhound with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Italian Greyhound makes a great companion dog as it enjoys the company of people. However the Italian Greyhound has an extremely fragile build which makes it not a decent choice for families with small children - as rough play is likely to harm an Italian Greyhound. The Italian Greyhound is also known to be incredibly loving, affectionate and loyal to its family unit. It is important to note that as a sporting breed, the Italian Greyhound has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Italian Greyhound has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity.
