Book Description
Excerpt from The Effects of Cold Weather Upon Train Resistance and Tonnage Rating The resistance offered by railway trains is greater in cold weather than it is under ordinary summer temperatures. Evi dence of this fact will occur to all who are concerned with train operation, and its recognition has led to the practice of redue ing tonnage ratings of locomotives during cold weather. This practice is almost universal among the railroads operating in the northern part of the United States and in Canada. On the few roads, running in this territory, which do not reduce ratings dur ing cold weather, it seems probable that the ordinary summer ratings are lower than they might Well he and that consequently the locomotives have a reserve tractive effort great enough to permit them to handle these same ratings throughout the winter months. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Operation: A Technical and Practical Analysis The object of this work is to give a complete and systematic discussion of the theory and practice of locomotive operation. By this is meant the work or results accomplished by a loco motive in motion, together with the effect upon itself and the track, and the amount of fuel and water needed to perform such work, rather than an exclusive treatise upon the mere manipulation of the machine, though the latter naturally forms a part of the study in connection with the proper manner of procuring certain results. The order in which the different conditions are taken up is somewhat at variance with the usual custom. Inertia is first considered, as this property is inherent in all bodies having motion of a variable character. The Action of the Steam is next examined in detail, as to its power of producing rotation and strains in the various members of the mechanism. Resistance naturally follows, as it must be overcome by the action of the steam. This leads us to Slipping and Braking, which are the logical outcome of the previous studies. These prepare us for an examination of the Hauling Power at slow speeds, but in order to consider high speeds, the steam capacity of the boiler must be determined, which is first under taken. As the principal business of the locomotive is to haul trains, this is the most important chapter of the treatise, and it is placed in this part of the work, so that the various factors by which it is governed might be studied in an elementary man ner before the complication necessary for a complete under standing of it is encountered. After this follow determinations of the water and fuel consumption under different conditions, and their economical use. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Performance: The Result of a Series of Researches Conducted by the Engineering Laboratory of Purdue University The purpose of this volume is to combine the most important of these results with other material not before published, and thus make a permanent and accessible record of the work Of the labora tory. If it should appear that the pages have been burdened with too great an array of detail, it should be remembered that many prefer such a minute presentation Of facts as will enable them to work out conclusions for themselves. Primarily, the volume is de signed as a record rather than a text, though it is hoped that, it will prove Of interest and value to any who wish to increase their acquaintance with the action of steam locomotives. As a whole, the researches are the outcome of many The trustees and president of the University have supplied means, professors and instructors have assisted in working out the problems Of the laboratory, students have given their aid as observers, and in addition to these, skilled assistants have had a part in checking, and arranging data. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Compounding and Superheating: A Practical Text-Book for the Use of Railway and Locomotive Engineers, Students, and Draughtsmen IT is now just upon thirty years since the first practical compound locomotives were built, but even yet the compound locomotive does not occupy the universally accepted position which theory would suggest that it should do. But whereas in the early years of its existence as a definite feature of locomotive engineering practice it was looked upon in most quarters with disfavour and distrust, and the engineers first concerned with the design of such engines had to contend against prejudice and opposition, and had no easy task to obtain even a trial of their systems, now the position is far more favourable, and compound locomotives according to many different systems are today in use to the number of many thousands in various parts of the world. In fact, it is not claiming too much to say that the compound locomotive occupies to-day an assured position, and it is probable that before many years have passed it will become a standard feature of locomotive engineering in all countries. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Traction: A Practical Handbook on the Application of Electricity as a Locomotive Power IN this book the Author has endeavoured to deal with the subject of Electric Traction from a practical standpoint, and mathematics have only been introduced where neces sary, and then only in a very simple form. Detailed descriptions of various traction undertakings have not been given, as what is good practice in one case is not necessarily so in another.
