Book Description
Excerpt from The Descendants of David Evans of Charlestown, Mass: To Which Is Appended Partial Records of Certain Families Connected With Them by Marriage This is the name of an extensive family connection or clan of Celtic or ancient British blood, in Wales. Through intermarriages with Anglo saxon and Norman families, their descendants have become essentially English. In the works of Thomas Dick D.D., the writer speaks of John Evans, an eminent Welsh divine. The name of the present Lord Mayor of London is Sir David Evans recently knighted. Many of the name emigrated to this country, and their descendants are found in nearly every State in the Union. A former United States Senator from Maine was George Evans. His emigrant ancestor was Daniel Evans, who settled in Allenstown N. H., about 1752. The progenitor of the line under consideration in this volume was David Evans of Charlestown, Mass. Efforts to trace his ancestry have so far been unavailing. Some of his descendants believed him to have been the emigrant ancestor; but this remains a matter of uncertainty. Many facts in the history of the family I obtained in my youth from long talks with Capt. William Evans, grandson of David of Charlestown, and my great-uncle. Capt. William was the first white malehorn in Fryeburg, Me. He died in 1855 at the age of ninety years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from From Generation to Generation: The Genealogies of Dwight Stone and Olive Evans When Mrs. Neil began this work, nothing was farther from her mind than publication. Her only thought was to make more intimate acquaintance with her own people; to gain some knowledge of their lives, how they met the dangers and difficulties of those earlier days, what they thought and said and did; in short, what manner of men and women they were. To learn a little of all this and perhaps, find a story or two for her grandchildren, was the height of her desire. In consequence, comparatively little care was taken in the beginning to preserve the names of authorities, once the fact itself was established to her own satisfaction. Later when the material began to accumulate, she decided to embody it in two type-written volumes one containing the ancestry of her father, Dwight Stone; the other, that of her mother, Olive Evans. In the spring of 1906, Professor George E. Stone, of Amherst, with whom she had carried on some correspondence, suggested that she should publish the book, assuring her that the number of those whom it would interest was far greater than she would dream was possible. She accepted the suggestion and, since then every effort has been made, not only to trace each line as far back as records would permit, but to keep the names of all authorities and to recover, when it could be done, those that had been lost. From the very first, however, no pains have been spared to verify each fact and whenever doubt remained it is so stated in the book. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Nathaniel Evans of Cat Fish Creek, and His Descendants The History of Nathaniel Evans, of Catfish Creek, and his Descend ants, has its written records chie y. In an old Welsh Church Register, the early land grants and memorials preserve-d among the arc-hives in. The Secretary of State's office at Columbia, the old Will Books and County Records in Marion Court House, a few old family Bibles, from which many dates and names have been supplied, and from some brief mention made of the family by historians of the localities to which the early settlers belonged. The narratives of the various collateral lines which will receive notice have been based on similar records furnished by members of respective families or fro-m my own researches. The main facts thus collected have been enlarged as far as possible and supplied with the traditions and legends which were cherished by the first comers, to be handed down from father to son to this day. Diligence in research has added to the knowledge thus acquired many other interesting facts which carry us back far beyond the advent of Nathaniel Evans in the New World, or the occasion and manner of his coming, and give us a glimpse of his native land and of the sturdy Welsh stock from which he sprung.
