Book Description
Although only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum can be seen by the human eye, people depend on the energy from the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum every day. Gamma rays might be familiar from comic books and superhero movies, but few know that gamma ray bursts are the most spectacular explosions observed in the universe. This book gives readers a look into the discovery, history, and uses of gamma rays. It's a perfect complement to the Next Generation Science Standards in electromagnetic radiation, and a perfect glimpse into how electromagnetic radiation is affecting us every day.

Book Description
What do a nuclear bomb, a mummy, a counterfeit bill, and a broken arm have in common? The answer is X-ray technology. Most people are probably familiar with the X-rays used in medicine, which can show organs within a body. This book explores the history of radiography and how it came to be one of the most useful tools in medicine. It also delves into the limits of radiography and the effects of ionizing radiation on living things. It further investigates many other uses of X-rays, including nuclear weaponry and counterfeit detection.

Book Description
The discovery of X-rays made medicine turn a corner and stride forward into a new era. In this book, a well-known scientist tells how the new rays were discovered, what relation they have to light and other parts of the wave spectrum that surrounds us, and how they can penetrate solid substances.

Book Description
661 tures, such as occurs in stellar atmospheres and in thermonuc1ear processes, will not be considered 1. Because photoelectric absorption predominates completely at low photon energies, and penetration theory is elementary under these conditions, attention is directed in this artic1e to photon energies above ""20 kev. On the high energy side, this artic1e does not cover the cascade shower processes which are dealt 2 with in cosmic ray studies • In this connection it is recalled that the cascade shower process, which involves electrons and positrons besides X rays, becomes predominant above 10 Mev in heavy elements, and above 100 Mev in light ones. Theories developed for the study of cascade showers in cosmic rays rely on assumptions about the prob ability of interactions with matter which are adequate only at energies of the order of 1 Gev or more. Below this energy there is a gap in which penetration phenomena are qualitatively known and understood but have not yet been calculated in detail. A few detailed experimental studies which have been made at energies up to 300 Mev will be reviewed in this article.
