Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Electricity The treatment is based mainly on the original faraday-maxwell theory, generalised and extended to the case of moving systems by Sir Joseph Larmor. This form of the theory has been almost entirely abandoned in recent accounts of the subject, but it remains the only one which appears to be completely satisfactory from the point of View of mathematical and physical consistency, and in its generality it is unapproached by any other form. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mathematical Theory of Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 The exhaustive character of the late Professor Maxwell's work on Electricity and Magnetism has necessarily reduced all subsequent treatises on these subjects to the rank of commentaries. Hardly any advances have been made in the theory of these - branches of physics during the last thirteen years of which the first suggestions may not be found in Maxwell's book. But the very excellence of the work, regarded from the highest physical point of view, is in some respects a hindrance to its efficiency as a student's text-book. Written as it is under the conviction of the para mount importance of the physical as contrasted with the purely mathematical aspects of the subject, and therefore with the determination not to be diverted from the immediate contemplation of experimental facts to the development of any theory however fas cinating, the style is suggestive rather than didactic, and the mathematical treatment is occasionally some what unfini'shed and obscure. It is possible, therefore, that the present work, of which the first volume is now offered to students of the mathematical theory of electricity, may be of service as an introduction to, or commentary-upon, Maxwell's book. Its aim is to state the provisionally accepted two-fluid theory, and to develop it into its mathematical consequences. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Physics The reduction of the two systems of units alone, the electrostatic system and the electromagnetic system, to one common system in terms of length and time introduces us to a new era in Physics. It is difficult to dismiss the thought that we are one step nearer to a satisfactory understanding of the nature of electricity and its intimate connection with the aether of space. Since this work was prepared the scientific world has been profoundly stirred by the announce ment of the results obtained during the total eclipse of the sun of May 29, 1919. For the first time in the history of eclipse observations, beginning with the eclipse of June 8, 1918, efforts have been made to verify the predictions made by Prof. Einstein that rays of light from the stars, passing close to the sun on their way to the earth, would suffer a certain very small deflection. These recent observations seem to agree with the prediction of Dr. Einstein, and at the least they have focused the attention of the scientific world upon the fundamental basis of the Einstein theory. This theory has sometimes been called The Relativity Theory of Gravitation, and some reference to it seems to be required in these prefatory remarks in order that this theory and that proposed in these pages may not seem to be conflicting. At first thought it seems as if there is only room for one theory of gravitation, and, if the Einstein theory is receiving confirmation, it may seem to follow that the theory given within these pages is brought into question. It is for the purpose of 'showing that this is not at all the case that refer ence to this matter is made here. Book Description
Excerpt from The Electron Theory: A Popular Introduction to the New Theory of Electricity and Magnetism It was about sixty years ago when there appeared the first glimmerings Of the knowledge which has since ripened into that which we now possess, that neither the molecules of any natural object nor the parts Of which those molecules consist are ever at rest; that, on the contrary, swift and orderly movements are ever in progress among them and within them; and that where bodies appear to us to be stationary, it is only be cause this great internal activity is on too small a scale, the parts moving too tiny, and the motions subject to too rapid changes Of direction for senses like ours even when assisted by the micro scope to Obtain any suggestion that all this activity is going forwards. Accordingly, until other means than direct Observation of arriving at the truth were discovered, every one remained under the delusion that the Objects about us on the earth could be brought to rest absolutely freed from every motion except the celestial motion, which is consequent upon their being on a planet which rotates upon an axis, revolves in an orbit round the sun, and accompanies the solar system in its peregrinations through space.
