Book Description
This dissertation examined the relationship between parental involvement, self regulated learning (SRL), and reading achievement of fifth graders using an archival data research design. Through a path analysis of the fifth grade data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K), this dissertation identified six dimensions of parental involvement that are likely to foster SRL of fifth graders: School Involvement, TV Rules, Homework Help, Homework Frequency, Parental Education Expectations, and Extracurricular Activities. Of them, three dimensions, Parental Education Expectations, School Involvement, and Homework Help, were found to have stronger effect on SRL; Parental Education Expectations was found to have the strongest beneficial effect on SRL. In addition, the results of this dissertation demonstrate that both School Involvement and Parental Education Expectations have the same strongest effect on fifth graders' reading achievement. Finally, the dissertation found that SRL mediates the relationship between parental involvement and reading achievement. These results provide a framework for educators and policymakers to engage parents more effectively in their children's education process by helping parents to promote their children's SRL.

Book Description
This study was completed to find if there is a significant difference in student literacy scores between parents who are highly involved in their child's education and parents who are not highly involved in their child's education. Parent involvement should be considered when developing classroom instruction that in turn affects how a student performs on a literacy test. Research shows that Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social and cultural capitol supports the idea that parent's who's culture varies greatly from the dominate culture in the school may struggle with parental involvement more so that those parents who relate more to the school culture. There is a known lack of parental involvement in the school systems and this is directly affecting student performance in the classroom. However, with the growing diversity among students in schools, parental involvement is becoming more difficult for parents. In this study, 110 8th grade students, from a high performing school in the district, were given a survey regarding parent involvement. After compiling and reviewing the findings of this study, current research and literature, and the statistical data from the survey, it was found that there is a significant difference among student literacy scores based on parent involvement, however the results show an opposite effect of what many may believe. Too much parent involvement can actually hinder a student's achievement in school.
