Educators who feel they do not have the sufficient background knowledge and confidence to teach science to students need a method that gives them the means to promote meaningful learning in the science content area. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness from the perspective of middle school teachers on the use of graphic organizers; and to present their insights on the effects of teacher confidence in practicing science education. The results indicated that for some educators who had an engaging teaching philosophy and effective classroom managmenet techniques used the graphic organizers as teaching tools that positively effected their ability and confidence to teach science. These techers used the process driven organizer to direct the flow of information and focus learning activities on the students. While other educators were too dependent on having the background content knowledge to use the graphic organizers to teach science. This paper examines the theory of how information is processed and applies it to the use of graphic organizers by teachers to engage in their own learning while teaching. This study also focuses on a new direction in graphic organizer research in an effort to provide a base for future investigations from the teacher's perspective.
