This paper summarizes some NACA research on the strength and creep of aircraft structural elements and components at elevated temperatures. Experimental data for aluminum-alloy columns, plates, stiffened panels, and multiweb box beams are presented for temperature up to 600 degrees F and compared with results predicted from materials data. Methods are described for predicting maximum strength from materials stress-strain curves and creep lifetime from isochronous stress-strain curves. Some observations on the probable effect of creep on the design of aircraft structures are also included to illustrate the influence of design criteria on the weight of aircraft structures at elevated temperatures.

High Temperatures in Aeronautics is a compilation of the proceedings of the Symposium on High Temperatures in Aeronautics held in Turin, Italy, on September 10-12, 1962. The symposium provided a forum to discuss the applications of high temperatures in aeronautics and covers topics ranging from supersonic combustion to non-equilibrium flow through a nozzle, along with similarity parameters in radiation gas-dynamics and photoionization upstream of a strong shock wave. This volume is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with an overview of the effects and consequences of high temperature in aeronautics, followed by an analysis of experimental results for the dissociation of diatomic gases. A theoretical and experimental investigation of mixing and supersonic combustion is then presented, focusing on inviscid flow fields with a finite rate chemistry for a hydrogen-air reaction. Turbulent mixing for flows with large density gradients having no chemical reaction is also considered, and the results of experiments in supersonic combustion are discussed. Subsequent chapters deal with silicon nitride, its properties, and its potential use at elevated temperatures; materials problems at high temperature; and the corrosion of refractory alloys by oil ash containing vanadium. A survey is made of the new problems introduced in the structural analysis of airplanes and missiles by the high temperatures caused by aerodynamic heating. Thermal stresses, thermal buckling, the effect of creep on stress distribution and stability, and ablation are discussed and special attention is paid to the behavior of the pure shells used in missiles. It is concluded that the modern structural analyst must acquire a knowledge of many disciplines that were of no interest to his predecessor working before World War II. Among these disciplines are thermodynamics, metallurgy, and the physics of the solid state. In all the new problems two parameters appear that did not enter classical structural analysis. The first is temperature which is the cause of all the difficulties of the modern structural designer and analyst. The second is time, because at high temperatures no structure can carry loads for indefinitely long periods. One of the most important tasks of the analyst of missiles is the determination of the lifetime of the structure. (Author).
