Numerous scientific studies show that biodiversity in Europe has been declining rapidly for some time and that this pattern has been matched by the great periods of expansion and intensification of land use. This is the third state and outlook report on the European environment produced by the European Environment Agency (EEA) since 1994. Some European lands have been progressively alleviated of human pressures, particularly traditional agriculture in remote areas.
