The systolic blood pressure responses to sustained 40% maximal voluntary index finger adduction and handgrip contractions were characterized for 21 male subjects. Using the systolic blood pressure measurements and the corresponding times at which they were taken, regression lines were calculated which illustrated the changes in systolic pressure with respect to time. The slope of the regression line representing the mean response to the larger muscle mass (.287) was significantly steeper (p less than .001) than that for the smaller mass (.052). The literature reviewed prior to conducting this study suggested that the systolic blood pressure response to isometric exercise is dependent on percent of maximal voluntary strength and independent of the size of the contracting muscle mass. The results of this study indicated that the size of the contracting muscle mass does influence the systolic blood pressure response to a sustained isometric contraction. (Author).

This study compared the cardiovascular responses to the PWC 140, cold pressor test (CPT), and isometric hand grip (IHG), to evaluate the consistency in the blood pressure response among these physical stressors. Eighteen resting normotensive males were classified as either normotensive at exercise or exercise hypertensive on the basis of their blood pressure response to the first stage of the Canadian Aerobic Fitness Test (CAFT) for their age group. Subjects were administered a 6-min PWC 140 bicycle ergometer test, a 120 sec CPT (forearm and hand immersion), and a 120 sec IHG at 30% MVC. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and ejection fraction (EF) were recorded every 5 seconds during a one min resting period, during exercise, and for 3 min post exercise using a Finapress 2000 BP monitor and BoMed bioimpedance cardiac monitor. The results of this study indicate that: (1) there were no significant differences between the two groups for the cardiovascular responses to the PWC 140, IHG, and CPT with the exception of a greater CO and SV in normotensives on the PWC 140, and a higher HR in exercise hypertensives on the CPT; (2) the exercise hypertensives had a greater rate of increase in SBP and DBP than the normotensives over the first 90 seconds of the CPT; (3) there was no consistent pattern in the individual responses to the CAFT, CPT, and IHG with respect to $\Delta$SBP. It was concluded that within the context of this study, the blood pressure responses to dynamic exercise, isometric exercise, and cold stress were not consistent among the subjects and tests.

There were two purposes to the work of this thesis (a) to identify the role of isometric training intensity in the training-induced reductions in resting blood pressure, and (b) to identify whether the mechanism for the reduced resting blood pressure is best reflected in what can be broadly termed cardiovascular, neuromuscular or metabolic markers of that training. Firstly, in a cross-sectional study, the only strong correlation was found between heart rate variability (a cardiovascular marker) and resting blood pressure. Secondly, this cardiovascular marker was also significantly affected by a single session of isometric exercise, an effect that persisted for at least 4 hours after exercise. However, thirdly, this marker and other cardiovascular markers (such as cardiac output and stroke volume) did not correlate with reductions in blood pressure seen after 4 weeks of isometric training. Instead, the training-induced reductions in blood pressure correlated strongly with neuromuscular and metabolic markers of isometric training. The extent to which local muscle fatigue was induced during isometric training correlated with the reductions in resting blood pressure. Therefore (a) isometric training intensity appears to be of utmost importance in the reductions in resting blood pressure (when bilateral-leg exercise is performed in 2 minute bouts), and (b) the mechanism whereby the adaptations in resting blood pressure occur is best reflected in neuromuscular and metabolic markers of local muscle fatigue during that training. These findings are discussed with a particular focus on the possible role of muscle metaboreceptor stimulation, during isometric training in the mechanism of training-induced reduction in resting blood pressure.
