Book Description
"This ex post facto causal comparative based study examined if any relationships existed between the attendance of the Supervision Level 1 training course held at the Atlantic Police Academy and the leadership style profiles of police field trainer attendees. Two biographically matched samples of 35 field trainers (trained and untrained), from the Maritime provinces, were given the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ 5X). The 26 returned surveys were used to determine the leadership profiles along 3 leadership style domains: transformational, transactional and laissez-faire (Bass & Avolio, 1997). The results were examined using a matched sample t test (25 df, .05 alpha) to determine the degree of differences between the two groups. No statistically significant differences were found, but the direction of the differences were consistent with previous research showing that leadership styles can be positively affected by training (Bass & Avolio, 1997). The laissez-faire score (1.782) approached statistical significance. Discussion of the need for future research in this area of police education."--Abstract.

Book Description
This brief focuses on the “doing” of procedural justice: what the police can do to implement the principles of procedural justice, and how their actions can improve citizen perceptions of police legitimacy. Drawing on research from Australia (Mazerolle et al), the UK (Stanko, Bradford, Jackson etc al), the US (Tyler, Reisig, Weisburd), Israel (Jonathon-Zamir et al), Trinidad & Tobago (Kochel et al) and Ghana (Tankebe), the authors examine the practical ways that the police can approach engagement with citizens across a range of different types of interventions to embrace the principles of procedural justice, including: · problem-oriented policing · patrol · restorative justice · reassurance policing · and community policing. Through these examples, the authors also examine some of the barriers for implementing procedurally just ways of interacting with citizens, and offer practical suggestions for reform. This work will be of interest for researchers in criminology and criminal justice focused on policing as well as policymakers.

Book Description
This paper outlines the Government's proposals for reform of policing, with a move away from bureaucracy towards more democratic accountability. There will be directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners, representing their communities and understanding their crime and anti-social behaviour priorities. They will hold chief constables to account for achieving them, and will be able to fire her or him if they do not. Chief constables will be responsible for the day to day operations of their police force but accountable to the public via these individuals and not Whitehall. Regular beat meetings will allow people to challenge the police's performance and accessible 'street level' crime data will shine a light on local crime trends and concerns. Central targets will be abolished, and the police will be encouraged to use their professional judgment in performing their job. The Government will create a new National Crime Agency to lead the fight against organised crime, protect the borders and provide services best delivered at national level.
