Here is the story of amateur black athletes, and their teams, who have distinguished themselves as pioneers in the fields of baseball, basketball, football, and track and field. Most of them participated in the intercollegiate leagues formed by such black centers of learning as Atlanta Baptist College, Howard University, Tuskegee Institute, Fisk University, and Morgan, Wiley, and Morris Colleges. A few individuals such as Moses Fleetwood Walker, who at Oberlin was the first Negro to play college varsity baseball, or All-American William Henry Lewis, who played football for both Amherst and Harvard, competed in the white leagues to be confronted by the barriers of prejudice that have haunted the annals of sports in this country and elsewhere. It was from the ranks of these amateurs that were to come the champions, such as Jesse Owens, who would win gold medals for the United States in international competetion at the Olympic Games. --From the book jacket.
