Book Description
Harlot at the Homestead Sometimes retribution finds its own way but sometimes it needs a helping hand. When Catherine Montgomery shows up at Kenan Duggan's homestead, she expects him to be surprised. She's been gone two years and she's devastated to hear that her former fiancé was forced to give her up for dead. Catherine never stopped thinking about Kenan and hoped that they'd be reunited one day. She has suffered at the hands of another but nothing tortured her as much as being apart from the man she loves. She doubts, however, that Kenan will be able to forgive her when she reveals her secrets. As Kenan battles his desire for revenge, their mutual desire reawakens like a creek bed in the rain, and soon they are swept up in rediscovering their all-consuming passion. Retribution often finds its own way in the Wild West and the men to blame for Catherine's disappearance may well find themselves paying for their crimes in unexpected ways. That's if Kenan doesn't get to them first! A Rancher for Rosie There's only one rancher for Rosie Duggan, but the course of true love never did run smooth. It is springtime, 1871, and Rosie Duggan is in love with Joshua Hampton, a handsome rancher's son. Joshua is seven years her junior, but they have fallen hard and hope to marry. Joshua's parents have other ideas. Firstly, they believe that Rosie is too old for their son. Secondly, they do not want Joshua marrying into the Duggan family. They believe that the Duggans are tainted by their association with Catherine Montgomery and her mysterious past. Rosie only wants the best for everyone she loves, so she makes several difficult decisions, preparing to sacrifice her own happiness to protect those around her. But sometimes the people we love are prepared to make sacrifices, too, so Rosie could well find the happiness she craves with her gorgeous rancher. Her Montana Cowboy Falling in love wasn't part of Huyana's plan, but when Matthew Duggan claims her as his own, she has to open her heart or risk losing everything. Life has been tough for Huyana. From the moment of her violent conception, the odds were stacked against her. Meeting Matthew Duggan and his family changes her life forever. Family can be close. People can be kind. Love can be good. But a lifetime of rejection and abuse is difficult to overcome and Huyana struggles to trust the man she loves. There are secrets in her past and she fears revealing them. Can Huyana find the happiness she craves and allow herself to be claimed by her Montana cowboy?

Marshal Mart Duggan's Leadville
Author: Robert V. Hunt Jr.
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1698710291
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
Eddie Foy, the famous vaudevillian who toured the West during the late 1800s, was qouted as saying that compared to Leadville, Colorado, Dodge City resembled a Sunday School. The 10,200 - foot high "Magic City" was one of the wildest mining camps of the era. This book is a semi-biographical history of Martin "Mart" Duggan, who was Leadville City marshal for two and nearly three terms before he met his end at the hands of gambling pals. But Leadville was also home to numerous other fascinating characters, not the least of whom was John Henry "Doc" Holliday, who had his last gunfight in Leadville in 1884. They all came to Leadville: the confidence men, the gamblers, the stage robbers, and the "soiled doves" though they could have never known it at the time, being primarily concerned with survival, these individuals in their totality combined to create one of the most intriguing camps in the Wild West. And the site of much of the action that made Leadville unique occurred on State Street, the half mile long stretch of gambling dens, saloons, and bawdy houses that rivaled any red light district then in existence. Even today, when State Street has been renamed Second Street, one can imagine Mart Duggan, Doc Holliday, and Tombstone's Johnny Tyler, to name only a few walking westward from Harrison Avenue to the east-west mecca of State Street. Gazing upward they would see majestic Mount Massive directly in front of them. What a view! What a mining camp! Marshal Mart Duggan's Leadville - the Wild West at its most fascinating.

Wonderful to Relate
Author: Rachel Koopmans
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 0812206991
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
While the late Anglo-Saxons rarely recorded saints' posthumous miracles, a shift occurred as monastic writers of the late eleventh and twelfth centuries started to preserve hundreds of the stories they had heard of healings, acts of vengeance, resurrections, recoveries, and other miraculous deeds effected by their local saints. Indeed, Rachel Koopmans contends, the miracle collection quickly became a defining genre of high medieval English monastic culture. Koopmans surveys more than seventy-five collections and offers a new model for understanding how miracle stories were generated, circulated, and replicated. She argues that orally exchanged narratives carried far more propagandistic power than those preserved in manuscripts; stresses the literary and memorial roles of miracle collecting; and traces changes in form and content as the focus of the collectors shifted from the stories told by religious colleagues to those told by lay visitors to their churches. Wonderful to Relate highlights the importance of the two massive collections written by Benedict of Peterborough and William of Canterbury in the wake of the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. Koopmans provides the first in-depth examination of the creation and influence of the Becket compilations, often deemed the greatest of all medieval miracle collections. In a final section, she ponders the decline of miracle collecting in the thirteenth century, which occurred with the advent of formalized canonization procedures and theological means of engaging with the miraculous.
