Her skin felt absolutely cold. The morning temperature was a pulse could just be felt at the wrist, and the heart beating at 56 per minute could, with care, be made out with the stethoscope. Her mind wandered continuously during the day. The wheezing had increased in the chest, and was now pronounced all over, and the breathing was more hurried. She was kept wrapped in hot blankets, and the same treatment which had been ordered the day before was continued. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dublin Journal of Medical Science, Vol. 129: January to June, 1910 After being altered by the above means, the food was expelled from the stomach either upwards or downwards, the direction being purely dependent on which orifice was opened. In deciding this important point the pylorus played the chief part. Indeed, a personality was actually supposed to be concerned with the performance of this function, and the name of pylorus signifies the guard or keeper of the entrance - the janitor or porter. For instance, Galen looked upon the pylorus as a regulator or governor of the entrance to the intestine, having sovereign authority and monarchical power over all-the other structures of the stomach. This governor was endowed with the faculty Of judgment and decision, by virtue of which he opened the portal only when he himself considered best. He did so at the end of digestion, not because he was urged thereto by the chyme, but because he had a knowledge of the events happening in the stomach. On the other hand, the pylorus closed the orifice and set up vomiting when he considered it would be injurious to the health to allow the stomach contents to pass further into the system. Book Description
Excerpt from The Irish Journal of Medical Science, Vol. 7: Formerly the Dublin Journal of Medical Science; The Official Organ of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland; September, 1922 In connection with photography it is worth while to mention that a key seems now to have been found to an old-standing and fascinating puzzle, viz., the chemical nature of the sub stances comprising the latent picture. The chemical guess that this is due to certain hypothetical sub-salts of Ag has never been experimentally demonstrated and may be cast aside. The truth about the latent image is this. It represents adsorption complexes of colloid silver in different degrees of dispersion, with normal non-reduced silver haloids. This view is beautift demonstrated by the experiments of W. Reinders who has succeeded in producing these photo-haloids synthetically in the form of differently coloured crystals by allowing different silver haloids to crystallise in the presence of differently coloured colloid silvers. The truth is, that. The photo-haloids of silver represent adsorption complexes of colloid silver in different degrees of dispersion with normal non-reduced silver haloids. (ino. Ostwald).
