Book Description
Excerpt from The Dominican Revival in the Nineteenth Century: Being Some Account of the Restoration of the Order of Preachers Throughout, the World Under Fr; Jandel the Seventy-Third Master-General In his early days as a Catholic, Newman may well have asked, as he actually did in a letter to Dalgairns in July 1846, whether the Dominican Order was not "a great idea extinct." With reference also to the fasts and abstinence enjoined by the rule of that Order, he said definitely: Nous avons change tout cela. Newman indeed may well have thought so then, for Alexander Vincent Jandel had not yet been appointed by Divine Providence to prove to the world that things had not really changed so much: to prove that now, if ever, there is need in the Church of an Order wedded to truth and austerity - an Order of men whose minds should be devoted to prayer and study with a view to preaching, and whose bodies should be kept in subjection as far as possible by fasting, abstinence, and vigils. Yet in Jandel himself there was little or nothing of the "primitive man" of Francis Thompson. "The old asceticism" can hardly have appealed very strongly to one who had so little "lustiness of the body."
