The Pacific Echo sea trials consisted of a series of collaborative experiments between the Defence Research Establishment Pacific and the Naval Research Laboratory, 1986-92. The general objective of the experiments was to investigate matched field processing for source localization and geoacoustic inversion using vertical and horizontal line arrays at thin-sediment sites in the north Pacific. The central focus of this aspect of the Pacific Echo project was to determine the effect of geological age on the sound speed in the upper oceanic crust. The purpose of this technical memorandum is to describe each of the four sea trials and to summarize the results in order to provide an overall picture of the collaborative experiments. The memorandum also contains related papers on Pacific Echo data analysis, six concerning source localization and two on matched field inversion for geoacoustic properties.

The Applied Technology (AT) section of Defence Research Establishment Pacific (DREP) is developing a side-scan sonar system for use on an autonomous vehicle to allow mine hunting or seafloor mapping operations to be carried out inexpensively. This paper describes a preliminary towed-body system designed & field-tested in 1993. It consists of components of the Klein 595 Digital Sonar System, most of which have been modified, and in-house components. The paper presents details of the non-proprietary elements of the system and the modifications made to the Klein components, including the towfish, power supplies, sonar transmitter, preamplifier, signal processor, trigger generator, buffers, and recording system. Results of trials detecting a specially designed sonar target and a shipwreck are discussed.
