Book Description
Research was carried out on vapor-to-particle condensation (adsorption of PAH on fly ash) and photochemical transformation of particulate POM. Results on the first research topic show that POM vapor is adsorbed onto co-entrained particles as the temperature falls. Photodecomposition of PAH's is decreased substantially by adsorption onto coal fly ash particles, although certain PAH's undergo rapid oxidation in the dark when adsorbed onto fly ash. Implications of the results for assessing the environmental/health impact of POM are discussed. (DLC).

Aquatic and Surface Photochemistry
Author: George R. Helz
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351078291
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 571
Book Description
Aquatic and Surface Photochemistry provides a broad overview of current research in the emerging field of environmental aquatic and surface photochemistry. Selected reviews and current research articles are blended to provide an in-depth treatment of various aspects of this research area. The first part of the text deals with photochemistry in the environment, covering recent research on the following topics: aquatic photochemistry of organic pollutants and agrochemicals, photochemical cycling of carbon and transition metals (especially iron), photochemical formation of reactive oxygen species in natural waters, photoreaction in cloud and rain droplets, and photoreactions on environmental surfaces (soil, ash, metal, oxide). The second part provides discussions and data on both heterogeneous photocatalytic and homogeneous processes, with topics ranging from applications to mechanistic studies. These chapters illustrate the wide diversity of pollutant classes that are degradable by photochemical techniques and the effects of various reaction conditions on the rates and efficiency of the techniques. Current kinetic studies are presented, which provide new information about the role of adsorption and the nature of the reactive oxidizing species that mediate these photoremediation processes. This book will interest civil, chemical, and environmental engineers, as well as chemists, soil scientists, geochemists, and atmospheric chemists.

Atmospheric Degradation of Organic Substances
Author: Walter Klöpffer
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527611622
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
This compilation on the degradation of 1,100 commercially important chemical products is the first publication to make this knowledge publicly accessible in one book. The data and annotations have been painstakingly assembled over a 10-year period in a collaboration between academia and regulatory authorities. The work explains in detail the methods, including computational ones, for the environmental assessment of volatile and semi-volatile substances, and is rounded off with data tables of degradation rates. A key resource for manufacturers and regulators of such substances.
