Book Description
Excerpt from The Court Rolls of the Honor of Clitheroe, in the County of Lancaster: Translated and Transcribed From the Original Rolls, Preserved in the Public Record Office, London and at Clitheroe Castle Clitheroe contained in this volume relate to the manors of Accrington and Haslingden, in the ancient parish of Whalley, and that of Tottington, in the parish of Bury, and cover the period down to the year 1567. This volume completes the work undertaken by the writer more than twenty years ago, and, with the two volumes already issued, places at the di5posal of the public the whole of the matter contained in the earlier Rolls of this great and important Honor down to the year named. Whilst it is a matter of congratulation to the students of local history that so much material illustrating the history of the past has been preserved to the present day, there is also a sense of regret that the local officers of the Crown did not take greater care of the earlier records, which belonged to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. A commission1 issued on 22 June, 22 Elizabeth to Ralph Asshton, the younger, one of the particular receivers of the possessions of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Edward Braddell, surveyor of woods in the north parts, to make a list of the Court Rolls in Clitheroe Castle, and to cause a strong and sure chest to be made for the safe keeping of the Records, Court Rolls, and other evidences, resulted in the following report made on the II October following. Book Description
Surnames have long provided key links in historical research. This ground-breaking work shows that English christian names are also significant for those researching local communities and family history - and that they are a fascinating topic in their own right. Did you know, for instance, that the names Philip and Thomas were once used for girls? Or that there was a woman called Diot Coke in 1379? When George Redmonds became interested in christian names, he found that the information on his own name in dictionaries was contradicted by local records and that the standard works' emphasis on etymology only gave part of the story. Half a lifetime's research has convinced him that every christian name has a 'pedigree', which can be regional, local or even centered on one family. Here he explores the implications of this for both amateur and academic historians. Drawing on examples from Anne to Zaccheus, he covers a wealth of topics including the stabilisation of first names as surnames; the influence of individuals, parents, godparents and communities on naming; the popularity of names over the last 700 years; and more recent changes in naming practice. He challenges many published assumptions - and offers new insights into the customs and attitudes of our ancestors from the Middle Ages to the present day.
