Camp Alpine Lake is the only place where Goldie Easton feels safe. She’s always had a special connection to the place, even before she was old enough to attend. The camp is the lifeline of Roxwood, the small town she lives in. Alpine Lake provides jobs, money and prestige to the region. Few Roxwood locals, though, get to reap the rewards of living so close to the glam summer that camp, with its five-figure tuition and rich kids who have been dumped there for eight weeks by their powerful parents. Goldie's one of them. Even with her "townie" background, Goldie has never felt more at home at camp and now she’s back as a counselor, desperate for summer to start and her best friends, Ava and Imogen, to arrive. Because Goldie has a terrible dark secret she’s been keeping and she is more in need of the comfort than ever. But Goldie’s not the only person at camp who has been lying. When a teen turns up dead in the lake late one night, she knows that the death couldn’t have been an accident. She also knows that Ava was at the lake that same night. What did Ava see and what does she know? Why hasn’t she said anything to Goldie about the death? Worse—what did Ava do? But asking questions offers no answers, only broken bonds of lifelong friendship, with hidden danger and betrayals deeper than Goldie ever imagined.

Book Description
"It is one thing to discuss these matters clearly and often, but it is another to make them living experiences for the reader. I am particularly impressed by the many ways in which the authors strive to involve the readers, whether it be by presenting dilemmas to consider or spelling out activities that highlight the points under consideration. This not only is a book that students will read with interest and enthusiasm, it also is one that will make the task of the instructor clear and easier to accomplish."- George Stricker, PhD, Argosy University The only text to integrate ACA and APA ethics standards and address ethical aspects of self-care This is the first textbook to integrate both ACA and APA standards of ethics for programs spanning both counseling and psychology disciplines. It provides a clear, comprehensive review of ethical standards and guidelines by the ACA and APA and distills the essence of both to find common ground for counselors and psychologists to understand and engage in ethical decision-making. The text also clarifies legal requirements at state federal levels, and facilitates critical thinking regarding the complex intersections of legal requirements and ethics codes in a way that is easily understandable. Focusing on key issues such as confidentiality, professional boundaries, professional and multicultural competence, social media, and situations with colleagues, the book is also unique in its inclusion of how ethical guidelines are impacted by self-care. Chapters engage readers with self-assessment questions, illustrative case vignettes, and discussion questions. A glossary of terms helps to clarify legal and ethical terminology and additional resources direct readers to more in-depth research. The text is ideally suited to meet the needs of both CACREP and non-CACREP programs that train counselors who work in an interprofessional climate of mental health care . It is also useful for undergraduate programs in addiction and substance abuse services counseling. An Instructor’s Manual provides additional value. Key Features: Reviews and integrates both ACA and APA ethical standards and guidelines Designed for both CACREP and non-CAPREP approved programs staffed by individuals representing both ACA and APA standards Focuses on confidentiality, professional boundaries, competence, social media, and responsibilities to colleagues Offers information on ethics of counselor self-care Includes case vignettes with discussion questions, self-assessment questions, glossary, and Instructor’s Manual

Book Description
Providing individual and group counseling for secondary school students was once a major priority for secondary school counselors. However, many guidance programs have abandoned this role, and counselors have become quasi-administrators who spend most of their time scheduling students for classes, managing mandated testing programs, resolving discipline issues, and advising students on college admissions. Counseling students on personal and well-being issues takes up a very small part of the time. In many school districts, social workers, student assistance counselors, and school psychologists have taken over the counseling duties. Critical issues are now causing school leaders to consider reorganizing school guidance staff so there is a cadre of counselors trained and charged with the mission of providing individual and group counseling for troubled teens. First, the number of troubled teens arriving at the schoolhouse door looking for help has exploded. Second, budget cuts have eliminated or drastically curtailed many of the services of social workers, student assistance counselors, and psychologists. The result? Many once open doors for help are now closed, and schools' counseling services are failing many students, parents, and educators in need of intervention. This book provides a new model in which well-trained counselors can once again regain their historic role in counseling troubled teens, parents, and training staff and students on the front lines to act -- not look the other way -- when they observe a student heading towards the margins of school life.

Book Description
School counseling is a rather specialized field, yet students entering it do not have a single, comprehensive resource to guide them through the process. This text covers all aspects of the practicum and internship experience, from the initial contact with your supervisor to detailed descriptions of each of the different roles you will have, and will help you gain an understanding of the school culture and how to begin thinking about and developing your own philosophy of school counseling. Specific topics covered include popular counseling theories used by school counselors; working with special populations of students; application of the ASCA ethical standards; the administration of day-to-day tasks, such as arranging an office space and managing your time; and elements of the guidance curriculum, including individual student planning, responsive services, and systemic support. Each chapter contains activities, case studies, hypothetical situations, and worksheets designed to facilitate your understanding of and role in the profession. All material presented is consistent with both the CACREP accreditation standards and the American School Counseling Association’s National Model ®.
