Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is an important part of the academic achievement of students. Several hours after breakfast, the body requires more fuel. The fuel is used to energize the body and help feel refreshed. The wrong fuel may have the opposite effect. The primary objective of this correlation study was to determine if there was a relationship between the academic achievement, as measured by reading and math scores on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) of 8th grade students and their nutritional intake. The qualifications of the selected participants were that they were in a North Georgia middle school. This population was chosen because 8th grade is the only grade level in Georgia Middle Schools required to demonstrate academic achievement for promotion. These students were required to meet or exceed in reading and mathematics on the CRCT; therefore, they took the test more seriously. The results indicated that a significant negative correlation existed between nutritional intake and academic achievement for both math and reading.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: It has been documented that children from all socioeconomic backgrounds are at risk for poor nutrition and lack of physical activity (PA). On one hand, many children from low-income families are not getting enough to eat each day due to a lack of resources. On the other hand, children from middle and upper income levels consume enough food, but their diets are high in fat, sugar, and sodium, and they do not participate in PA. As a result of this combination, many children today face an increased risk for under-nutrition, obesity, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Finally, educators and health professionals agree that poor diet, eating habits and lack of PA, also affect academic performance. The fact that a hungry child cannot learn has been documented in numerous studies. Indeed, this research has found that even moderate under-nutrition and an immense lack of PA can have lasting effects on children's ability to learn and school performance. Undernourished and untrained children tend to attain lower scores on standardised tests, are more likely to become sick, miss school, and to fall behind in class. Also, hungry children have low energy, are more irritable, and have difficulty concentrating, which interferes with learning. Therefore, school feeding and PA programs were established by several schools and public and private organizations to provide proper nourishment and the possibility of practicing PA. In addition it helps preventing the negative effects of hunger and malnutrition. The School Breakfast Programs was established as a pilot project in 1966 in response to the needs of children arriving at school without having eaten breakfast. Now permanent, breakfast programs help states provide daily breakfast to millions of students in thousands of schools. The positive impact of this program cannot be underestimated. Not only do many teachers report that students are more alert and perform better in class after eating a nutritious breakfast, but published studies also found that breakfast programs are associated with significant improvements in academic functioning among school children. PA programs can substantially improve children s ability to learn and their state of health by making PA a part of their daily lives. The nutrition essentials: Teaching Tools for Healthy Choices nutrition module was used to teach clinically based nutrition. The research used rural Georgia seventh and eighth grade students' to evaluate the effects of nutrition education on the students' nutrition knowledge and attitudes using the SPAN student questionnaire. MANOVA was used to determine if changes occurred between the control and experimental groups. Results of the study showed that the short term study did not improve student nutrition knowledge or attitudes.

Author's abstract: Childhood obesity has become an epidemic that can no longer be ignored. Obesity issues are being addressed through House Bill 108-265, under the provisions provided in Public Law 108-265, Section 2507; which requires school districts to develop local wellness policies. Local wellness policies include goals for nutrition education and physical activity, nutrition guidelines with the objectives of promoting student health and promoting the reduction of childhood obesity, meal reimbursement guidelines, a plan for measuring implementation, and input of multiple stakeholders. Although there have been many studies on the causes and costs of childhood obesity, less is known regarding the potential challenges to and benefits for implementing local wellness policies. The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges to and potential benefits for implementing local wellness polices in Georgia Public Schools. Data from this study were collected from nine in-depth interviews in three different school districts throughout the State of Georgia. The results of this study for potential benefits include an increase in nutritional offerings during school lunches, increased awareness on health related topics, increased health education and promotion, potential long-term health benefits, healthier more alert students including higher selfesteem, reduced stress, increased attendance and academic achievement; and an increase in physical activity including more recreation and physical education classes for students and staff. The results of this study for challenges to implementing local wellness policy include lack of time in parent and teacher schedules, teacher stress, vending sponsorships and profits, lack of training, lack of state and federal financial support, the availability of convenience and fast foods, costs associated with healthier foods, increased academic requirements and state mandates, and family and cultural values towards nutrition and physical activity. All district local wellness policies included the minimum necessary requirements under federal law; however, a disconnection was evident between implementation by district administrators and implementation in the schools. Consequently, although all districts had a written policy, there was a lack a plan for implementation at all levels. Based on this study, there is a need to help districts develop creative ways to incorporate the local wellness policy requirements into the instructional day, provide alternative ways to seek loss of vending profits, and lobby legislators to provide financial and technical support. Finally, there needs to be a clear understanding of the responsibilities of each stakeholder, a need to specifically identify the objectives and intended outcomes of local wellness policy implementation, and a plan for evaluation.
