Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern French Drama That modern England possessed a stage, supported by dramatic writers of ability, independence, and originality. When the papers on the English Stage first appeared in book form, I asked M. Filon to do something of the same kind of service for English readers as he had already done for his kinsmen across the Channel, and illustrate in the pages of the Fortnightly Review some of the main principles and tendencies underlying the contemporary drama in Paris. The conditions in the two cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Contemporary Drama of France This volume offers a survey and an interpretation of the French drama for three decades, from the opening of the Theatre-Libre of Antoine to the conclusion of the World War. It attempts the classification, analysis, and criticism of a thousand plays by two hundred and thirty authors. Among these are included a few Belgians whose pieces, written in French, have been as familiar to Paris as to Brussels. Although the productions of the period be less striking than those of the Romantic era, and less likely than those of the Classic to endure, they are more numerous and more vitally interesting to the generation whose failures, foibles, and aspirations they depict. Thus far, only one book in English has been exclusively devoted to this subject - the succinct and suggestive Contemporary French Dramatists (1915) of Barrett H. Clark, which considers a dozen major playwrights, yet essays no history of current French drama as a whole. Book Description
Excerpt from Brieux and Contemporary French Society HE purpose of this book is to explain to Ameri can readers the social themes treated by Eugene Brieux in his dramas and their relation to French society. I realize very well that such an undertaking is not easy; the difficulties in any attempt to estimate contemporary foreign litera ture are many and real. It is always hazardous to judge contemporary writers, and French literature is possibly even more baffling than that of most countries for a foreigner to criticize. At least Renan declared that the essential characteristic of the French genius was not to be well under stood abroad; and Henry Bidou has recently asserted that it is stupefying to read what a foreigner will write when discussing French litera ture. Yet the attempt to explain Brieux seems justified in view of the great demand for the few available books on him and on such contemporaries of his as Ibsen, Strindberg, and Shaw. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the French Classical Drama IF we assume with the large majority of French critics that the seventeenth century was the time in which French art most truly reflected the ideal qualities of the French nation as a whole, we Shall be anxious to discover in the literature of that century what it is that marks it ofi from the pseudo-classical literature of the age of Anne in England, and why the Siecle d'or is a truer epithet as applied to France than the Augustan age as applied to England.
