During the last decades, private label products evolution has radically changed the retail industry in manifold ways. Nowadays, private label products are constantly gaining market shares and penetrate in new product categories. Numerous studies have identified several factors affecting consumers' attitudes towards private label products. This paper examines consumers' perception on private label products, as compared with the branded products, under the spectrum of five basic dimensions: (a) quality, (b) price, (c) packaging, (d) status and (e) innovation. Moreover, it attempts to identify changes in Greek consumers' attitudes towards private label products within the last three years, and thus investigate the impact of the current economic recession. Finally, differences in consumers' attitudes across specific private label product categories (ie. food, home care and personal care) are examined. Primary empirical research was conducted, focusing on Greek consumers shopping attitudes. The findings of the research, confirmed the existence of differences in consumers' evaluations between private label and branded products under all dimensions examined. Branded products were favoured as far as it concerns their quality, packaging, status and innovation. On the other hand, as it was expected, private label products were favoured for their price. In addition, statistically significant differences were found in consumers' attitudes towards private label products within the last three years. It seems that consumers have become more price sensitive, thus their attitudes towards private label products has changed in a positive way compared with three years ago. Finally, differences were also found in consumers' attitudes towards private label products across the three product categories examined. Specifically, it was found that consumers, as regards private label products, tend to have a positive attitude towards home care products and negative attitude towards food and especially personal care products. Several managerial implications for marketers were also identified.

This study addresses the question of the impact of packaging to demand a price premium leveraging the example of retailer brand premium products in the food segment in Germany. Product tiering is a pricing structure that is commonly used by producers, in which consumers are segmented by willingness to pay for specific (added) product benefits. This is a way of maximizing utility for both consumers and producers, and is commonly already leveraged by producers of branded products, but lately also by retailer brands, especially to enable growth outside the value tier. This research uses a survey across grocery purchase decision makers in Germany to identify the relationship of packaging and willingness to pay across a sample of retailer brand Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 products as well as a branded product in four different grocery categories. The intent is to answer whether i) packaging currently justifies the premium price of retailer brand tier 1 products compared to other product tiers, ii) packaging justifies the tier 1 retailer brand price premium, and iii) demographics influence the willingness to pay a premium price.

With over 115,857 traditional grocery stores and a $700 billion market, grocery shopping represents one of the most common shopping ventures for American consumers (Zeballos, 2020). Despite having several brands to choose from, grocery shopping is seen as a mundane chore which in turn is characterized by low involvement (Cockburn-Wootten et al., 2018). As such, this study sought to examine one possible influencer of the American grocery shopper’s product choices. More specifically the study sought to address whether social settings of various levels of group intimacy (household use, party with friends, and work-sponsored party) influenced American consumers’ perception of the social risk of buying grocery PLBs. This study made use of ketchup and soda as product stimuli. This was due to the label visibility, or publicness, of the products in a typical serving situation. It was found that NBs have purchase preference and are perceived to be of higher quality, while their PLB counterparts were viewed neutrally. The NBs were also found to have slightly higher self-congruence, albeit slightly above neutral. Regarding social risk, social scenarios were not found to be an influence of the perceived social risk of NBs. For PLBs, household and friend scenarios were rated similarly with no significant difference. However, the work scenario was found to influence perceived social risk. This study implies that American consumers don’t view PLBs negatively, rather they’re viewed as unpreferred or not the standard.
